“Awarapan,” a profound romantic musical released in 2007, indelibly etched the characters of Shivam and Aliyah into the annals of Bollywood history. Under the direction of Mohit Suri, celebrated for his emotionally charged romantic narratives, this film offered one of Hindi cinema’s most poignant love stories. Despite its initial lukewarm reception at the box office, “Awarapan” steadily garnered a dedicated following over the years, ascending to the status of a cult classic. Recognizing this enduring appeal, Vishesh Films is set to release a highly anticipated sequel, “Awarapan 2,” on August 14th, coinciding with the Independence Day weekend. This new installment, helmed by Nitin Kakkar, will feature Disha Patani in the lead female role.
The film’s narrative centers on Shivam, portrayed by Emraan Hashmi, an atheist gangster operating under the employ of Bharat Malik (Ashutosh Rana), a formidable businessman and crime lord based in Hong Kong. Shivam’s life is profoundly scarred by the tragic demise of his beloved Aliyah, played by Shriya Saran. Aliyah, a devout Muslim, faced staunch opposition from her family regarding her relationship with Shivam. Despite these formidable obstacles, their love blossomed, leading Shivam to pledge to his father that he would abandon his criminal life to forge a new beginning with her. However, their dreams were shattered when Aliyah’s father, in an attempt to shoot Shivam, inadvertently killed his own daughter, leaving Shivam consumed by an unbearable burden of grief and guilt.
Some time later, still grappling with the profound loss, Shivam encounters Reema (Mrinalini Sharma), Malik’s mistress. Reema’s plight eerily mirrors Shivam’s own unfinished love story with Aliyah. Malik, sensing a betrayal, tasks Shivam – whom he treats as a son – with monitoring Reema’s activities, as she is secretly involved with a man named Bilal. Initially, Shivam’s loyalty to Malik prevails, and he informs his boss about Reema’s clandestine relationship. This prompts Malik to order the elimination of both Reema and Bilal. However, upon confronting Reema, Shivam experiences a profound shift. Witnessing her situation, a poignant reflection of his own unfulfilled love, he makes a momentous decision: for the first time, he defies Malik, choosing to allow Reema to live her life with the man she loves, setting in motion a chain of events that will define his redemption.
Malik soon uncovers Shivam’s act of defiance. As Shivam attempts to escape Hong Kong with his best friend Kabir (Shaad Randhawa), a momentary lapse in loyalty leads Kabir to betray Shivam by revealing his escape plans to Malik. Overwhelmed by regret, Kabir later risks his own life to help Shivam rescue Reema and Bilal. Amid escalating danger, Malik’s biological son, Ronnie, brutally tortures Shivam, coercing him to kill Reema. Shivam, however, manages to escape, finding refuge in a monastery. Upon learning of Malik’s sinister plan to “sell” Reema, Shivam undergoes a complete transformation. He ultimately confronts and kills Malik to save her. In a heroic act of sacrifice, Kabir lays down his life fighting off Ronnie and Malik’s gang, ensuring Reema and Bilal’s safe passage to Lahore. Shivam, meanwhile, remains behind to face the remaining attackers. Though he emerges victorious, he sustains fatal injuries and dies, his final thoughts consumed by Aliyah. This tragic ending leaves a compelling mystery, which “Awarapan 2” is poised to unravel, exploring the ultimate fate of Shivam after the events of the original film.
The upcoming “Awarapan 2” marks Emraan Hashmi’s highly anticipated return as Shivam Pandit, reprising one of his most iconic roles nearly two decades after the original’s release. Alongside Emraan, Disha Patani introduces a new character named Zara, while seasoned actors Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky also feature in significant roles.
