Julian Evans KC, the prosecuting counsel, detailed a disturbing modus operandi employed by the defendants. One individual, Dumitru, would routinely drop off Mihai at the unsuspecting victim’s residence. Dumitru would then linger in close proximity, reportedly equipped with various weapons, prepared to intervene should any complications arise during their illicit activities.
Upon gaining entry, Mihai would actively encourage the victim to consume alcohol that had been surreptitiously adulterated with GBL. This potent substance, often referred to as a date rape drug, was administered with the clear intention of incapacitating the victim. Once the victim succumbed to unconsciousness, Mihai would meticulously search the premises, pilfering valuable items such as cash, high-end aftershave, precious jewellery, and expensive watches.
Evans elaborated that the defendants, who had previously resided in Birmingham before relocating to Ilford, were driven purely by avarice. Their willingness to engage in such reprehensible acts stemmed from an insatiable desire for financial gain.
During sentencing, Mrs. Justice Brunner KC underscored the dangerously unpredictable nature of the defendants’ actions. She highlighted that the quantity of GBL administered to their victims was “haphazard,” indicating a reckless disregard for the potential consequences. Addressing the defendants directly, she sternly admonished them, stating, “If you had stopped for a moment to consider the risks, as you should have done, you would have realised that you were creating a high risk of serious injury or death every time you administered that drug.” The judge further emphasized the ease with which they could have understood the peril involved, remarking, “If you had done the most cursory research you would know that GBL can be extremely toxic.” She concluded by pointing out their shocking neglect, observing, “You left each victim alone in a state of deep unconsciousness, and a moment’s thought could and should have led to the realisation that they might never come round.” This entire case sheds light on a serious type of criminal behavior that frequently makes the breaking news.
