Actress Kangana Ranaut has once again come forward to defend her contentious “Generation Gutter” remark, which had previously ignited a firestorm of debate, particularly among young people. Her comments were initially perceived as a broad condemnation of Gen Z following their involvement in protests. However, Ranaut has now clarified that her sharp criticism was specifically aimed at a segment of the protestors present at Jantar Mantar during the demonstrations concerning the NEET-UG paper leak, and not intended as a sweeping indictment of the nation’s entire youth demographic.
Ranaut took to Instagram Stories to address the significant backlash her previous statements had generated. She argued forcefully that the Jantar Mantar gathering could not be accurately labeled a “Gen Z protest” given the noticeable presence of individuals from various age groups. “The youth of this country? If we speak of Gen Z, then the population is around 30–35 crore,” she posited. “Around 10,000 people were at Jantar Mantar, where more than half of them were Shabana Azmi-type people, so many age groups were present. If we specifically speak of Gen Z, then only 2,000 of them were present. So, how is it a Gen Z protest?” This statement underscores her point that a significant portion of the demonstrators did not fall within the Gen Z demographic, thereby questioning the broad classification of the protest itself.
She further elaborated, emphasizing that her criticisms were exclusively directed at the specific crowd that had assembled to voice their grievances over the NEET-UG paper leak. She adamantly stated, “It was for the crowd which had gathered outside. I had specifically spoken about them. I am giving an open challenge to pick out any quote where I directed it at the entire generation. Don’t throw this useless agenda at me. I am not against the youth because I am one of them.” Ranaut’s clarification seeks to delineate her comments as a targeted critique rather than an overarching generalization about an entire generation.
