The landscape of artificial intelligence applications in India is experiencing a period of intense competition and rapid evolution. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT maintains its position as the leading platform in terms of user engagement and overall expenditure, a dynamic shift is underway as Google’s Gemini makes significant inroads and Anthropic’s Claude emerges as a formidable and swiftly expanding contender. This competitive environment is evidenced by recent data from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
During the second quarter of 2026, Claude demonstrated the most dramatic increase in growth among all major generative AI applications. Its download figures in India experienced an astounding thirty-fold year-on-year surge, reaching 8.5 million. Concurrently, consumer spending on the application witnessed an almost nineteen-fold jump, culminating in approximately 62.2 crore Indian rupees. This rapid acceleration is particularly noteworthy given Claude’s relatively nascent presence and smaller user base in the Indian market until very recently. Eve Chen, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower, highlighted Claude’s sustained growth, noting that “Claude stands out with more consistent momentum, with downloads and monthly active users accelerating since early 2026, making it an increasingly notable player despite its smaller user base.”
Despite Claude’s impressive trajectory, ChatGPT continues to hold a substantial lead in terms of monetization. Consumer spending on ChatGPT reached approximately 112.8 crore Indian rupees during the second quarter, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. Other significant players in this burgeoning market include Grok, which generated around 20.4 crore rupees, followed by Perplexity at 5.8 crore rupees, and Gemini at 1.8 crore rupees.
However, Google’s Gemini is proving to be a potent challenger when it comes to user engagement. Its downloads more than doubled, reaching an impressive 18.1 million. Furthermore, Gemini’s share of the total time users spent across all generative AI apps saw a sharp rise, climbing to 18.7% from just 4.9% a year prior. This indicates a growing preference among users for Gemini for their AI-powered interactions, suggesting a potential shift in user habits and preferences within India’s dynamic AI app landscape. The escalating competition promises further innovation and a wider array of sophisticated tools for consumers in the near future.
