Despite his celebrated status as a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, Sunny Deol has recently unveiled a deeply personal aspiration that, regrettably, never materialized: his fervent desire to become a Formula 1 driver. This unfulfilled ambition, as the actor shared, was ultimately thwarted by the intensely protective nature of his father, the legendary Dharmendra. This candid revelation emerged during Deol’s appearance on the popular television quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, expertly hosted by the iconic Amitabh Bachchan.
During the engaging episode, Amitabh Bachchan directly addressed Deol’s long-standing interest in the world of motorsport, inquiring, “Sunny ji humne sunna hai ki aap ek racing driver hona chahtein thein? Formula 1 wagera…” (Sunny, we heard that you wanted to be a racing driver? Formula 1?). Deol’s response shed light on his early passion for driving and the paternal restrictions that prevented him from pursuing it further. He elaborated, “Haan, mujhe aise bahot shauk thein, driving ka to bahut shauk tha, jaise aap jaante hi hain, papa humarein ghar mai kahi bhi, kuch bhi aisey kuch karna chahein, whether we want to do sports or anything, at that time because of protection… ijjazat nahi milti thi.. so beech mein hi rehgaya.” This translates to, “Yes, I had a passion for such things. I was particularly passionate about driving. But as you know, in our house, whenever we wanted to pursue sports or anything like that, because of father’s protective nature… we didn’t get permission. So that dream just remained incomplete.” Sunny Deol was joined on this particular episode by his ‘Batwara 1947’ co-star Preity Zinta and the accomplished producer Aamir Khan.
