Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently articulated India’s ambitious vision to host the 2036 Olympic Games, announcing a comprehensive nationwide talent identification program specifically designed to cultivate a new generation of elite athletes. Speaking from the historic Red Fort on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, Modi emphasized that India’s aspiration extends beyond merely hosting the prestigious event; it encompasses a commitment to significantly enhance the nation’s competitive presence across a multitude of Olympic disciplines.
This proposed talent hunt will meticulously target children between the ages of five and fifteen, seeking out promising sporting prospects from every corner of the country. Once identified, these budding athletes will undergo specialized training, meticulously crafted to transform them into world-class competitors. Modi highlighted the considerable strides India has already made in the realm of sports, noting the increasing frequency with which the national anthem resounds and the tricolor flag is hoisted on international platforms. He specifically lauded the success of initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), launched in 2014, as well as the positive impact of programs such as Khelo India Games, University Games, Beach Games, and Winter Games, alongside advancements in sports training, medicine, and nutrition.
Despite this progress, Modi acknowledged areas requiring substantial improvement. He pointed out the sobering reality that out of approximately 40 Olympic disciplines and nearly 350 events, India often fails to compete in at least two-thirds of them, primarily due to an inability to even qualify. His vision for 2036 is to ensure Indian participation in at least three-fourths of these events. To achieve this, the nationwide talent hunt for children aged 5 to 15 is crucial, designed to unearth talent everywhere and provide them with the specialized training needed to become global athletic contenders.
The outcome of India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics is anticipated in 2029. Ahmedabad, which is already slated to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, is also being considered as a potential host city for the 2036 Olympic Games.
A significant element of this proposed talent identification drive is the extensive utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This cutting-edge technology will play a pivotal role in administering fitness battery tests, meticulously designed to assess various crucial athletic attributes, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, speed, agility, flexibility, balance, and overall movement. The concept of a nationwide talent hunt in preparation for the 2036 Games has been under consideration since earlier this year, with initial reports in January indicating the government’s exploration of this strategy. The overarching goal is to identify athletes who can bolster India’s performance in disciplines where it has historically struggled, particularly aquatics and cycling.
The sheer scale of the opportunity in these underperforming disciplines is substantial. For instance, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will feature 55 medal events in aquatics alone, while rowing will offer 45 medals across 15 events, and cycling will present 66 medals across 22 events. Currently, India is not expected to qualify for any of the aquatics events in Los Angeles, and both rowing and cycling represent significant areas for growth and development within the country’s sporting landscape.
The strategic approach being considered draws parallels with China’s meticulous preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they significantly enhanced their presence in disciplines like boxing, canoeing, and archery, ultimately securing a record 100 medals. For India, key areas targeted under this expansion plan are expected to include aquatics, cycling, rowing, and gymnastics.
This new initiative will also seamlessly integrate with and build upon the existing Khelo India Talent Development (KITD) scheme. This established program already plays a vital role in identifying promising athletes and providing them with a clear pathway towards specialized training at Khelo India Academies, national camps, and other elite-level sporting programs. According to information provided by the Sports Ministry, India currently boasts 1,067 Khelo India Centres spread across the nation, forming a robust foundation for this expanded talent search.
The government firmly believes that a broader, more inclusive talent search will be instrumental in uncovering children with latent sporting potential who might otherwise never have the opportunity to pursue competitive sports. A government source, speaking to PTI in January, articulated this sentiment, suggesting that not every school-going child is aware of their sporting capabilities or naturally gravitates towards sports. However, by implementing a nationwide talent hunt through basic tests designed to assess individual capabilities, the nation could discover gifted children who possess athletic prowess but are simply unaware of it.
Beyond fostering domestic sporting talent, Prime Minister Modi also passionately advocated for India to become a more prominent global destination for major international sporting competitions. He posed the rhetorical question, “Duniya ke sports events Bharat mein kyu na hon? (Why should global sports events not be held in India?).” In alignment with this vision, the Sports Ministry, under the leadership of Mansukh Mandaviya, has already formulated a calendar featuring 11 international competitions slated to be held in India over the next six months. This impressive schedule includes the Badminton World Championships, which commenced recently in India. By simultaneously pursuing ambitions to host major events like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics, while concurrently expanding its sporting talent pool and participation across Olympic disciplines, India is signaling its serious intent to emerge as a global sporting powerhouse.
