The cinematic landscape is currently experiencing a dynamic shift, with several recent releases making their mark at the box office. Among them, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s debut feature, ‘DC’, has emerged as a significant contender, achieving a notable milestone by surpassing the 50 crore mark in India. This impressive feat was largely propelled by a robust performance on its second Saturday, where the film garnered an estimated net collection of Rs 5.50 crore. This figure represents a remarkable 92.3% increase compared to its Day 8 earnings of Rs 2.86 crore, as reported by Sacnilk.
‘DC’ demonstrated strong audience engagement, recording an overall occupancy of 50.1% across 2,154 shows nationwide. The Tamil version of the film proved to be the primary revenue driver, contributing a substantial Rs 4.05 crore, while the Telugu version added Rs 1.42 crore to the total. The Hindi version, though smaller in scale, still chipped in with Rs 3 lakhs. These cumulative figures have pushed the movie’s India net collection to a commendable Rs 50.26 crore, with its India gross collection reaching Rs 57.85 crore.
Beyond domestic shores, ‘DC’ has also made a significant impact in international markets. On Day 9, the film added an additional Rs 1.50 crore from overseas territories, bringing its total overseas gross collection to Rs 20.25 crore. When combined with its India gross, ‘DC’ has now achieved a worldwide gross of Rs 78.10 crore, highlighting its broad appeal.
A deeper dive into the occupancy rates reveals particular strengths in different regions and time slots. The Tamil version of ‘DC’ registered an impressive 62.78% overall occupancy on Saturday. Afternoon screenings were particularly popular, reaching a peak of 74.00% occupancy, while morning shows recorded 45.77%, evening shows 56.69%, and night shows 46.69%. The Telugu version also showed solid numbers, with an overall occupancy of 41.40%. Its afternoon shows led with 53.40%, followed by evening shows at 44.70%, night shows at 42.60%, and morning shows at 24.90%.
State-wise contributions further underscore the film’s widespread appeal. Tamil Nadu led the pack on Day 9 with a contribution of Rs 2.00 crore. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana jointly added Rs 1.75 crore, matching Kerala’s contribution of Rs 1.75 crore. Karnataka brought in Rs 75 lakhs, and the rest of India contributed Rs 13 lakhs. These collective efforts resulted in a state-wise gross of Rs 6.38 crore for the day, solidifying ‘DC’s’ position as a significant commercial success.
In contrast to ‘DC’s’ strong performance, R. Madhavan’s ‘GDN’ has had a more modest theatrical run. The film has accumulated an India net collection of Rs 4.76 crore to date, with an India gross collection of Rs 5.35 crore. The Telugu version of ‘GDN’ contributed Rs 41 lakhs to the overall net total. Its daily collections in Telugu started with Rs 7 lakhs on Day 1, increased to Rs 9 lakhs on Day 2 and Rs 10 lakhs on Day 3, before experiencing a dip to Rs 3 lakhs on Day 4. Collections then saw minor fluctuations, with Rs 4 lakhs on Day 5, Rs 3 lakhs on Day 6, and Rs 5 lakhs on Day 7.
Meanwhile, another film making waves is Suriya and Mamitha Baiju’s ‘Vishwanath and Sons’, which has demonstrated strong growth during its opening weekend. According to Sacnilk, ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ garnered an India net collection of Rs 22.25 crore on Day 2, marking a significant 45.0% increase from its opening day collection of Rs 15.35 crore. This indicates a promising trajectory for the film. Conversely, Vijay’s previous outing, ‘Jana Nayagan’, appears to have lost its traction at the entertainment market, struggling to maintain its initial momentum.
