A prominent retail establishment in Tennessee, dedicated solely to selling merchandise related to former President Donald Trump, is set to close its doors. The reason, as confirmed by its owner, is a significant decline in customer traffic. This store, strategically located along Interstate 40 near Knoxville, Tennessee, was impossible to miss. Its exterior featured a colossal Trump billboard, numerous banners, and even a brick outhouse sarcastically labeled the "Democrat Superstore," leaving no doubt about its political allegiance and the type of goods it offered.
Currently, the shop is liquidating its entire remaining inventory with a substantial 50 percent discount as it prepares for its impending closure. The owner, identified as William "Bill" Hays, openly admitted to Slate that the business is failing due to an insufficient number of shoppers. This admission directly contradicts an earlier report from Knox News, which had suggested the closure was due to Hays’s retirement and a move to the South. Hays vehemently denied these claims, stating, "The girl that reported that did not know what she was talking about. I’m not retiring, not moving down, but we own two condos in Naples… Yes, I am old and I am 80, and I do own condos and other businesses. I don’t know why the hell she said I was 80, anyway." He further speculated that the reporter might have intentionally avoided stating the real reason for the closure: a lack of business.
An employee at the store, who introduced himself as Dan, corroborated Hays’s account. Dan lamented, "We’re not busy anymore." He recalled a time when the store was a bustling hub, noting that its busiest day saw 86 customers. Interestingly, Dan mentioned that business spiked on two specific occasions: the day after conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk was reportedly killed, and the day after Trump initiated his war in Iran. Hays also reminisced about the surge in sales following the assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024, describing it as "huge" for his business. He vividly described the scene: "People were waiting to walk in the door. Everybody was going ‘Choo Choo Trump train,’ and this whole building was moving. I mean, it was just, it was unbelievable."
However, Dan was quite forthright about his assessment of why customers have dwindled. He acknowledged that Trump’s popularity appeared to be "dwindling" and highlighted the financial struggles many people are facing. He attributed these hardships to Trump’s imposed tariffs and the high gas prices resulting from the conflict in Iran. Dan articulated the challenging economic reality for many consumers, stating, "People really are saying, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to do a full load of groceries or I’m going to put my electric bill on a credit card this month.’"
The sale of Trump merchandise has historically been a lucrative venture for the former president and his supporters. His political rallies are frequently dotted with vendors peddling various items, and his official online store boasts an extensive catalog of products. Reports indicate that Trump’s online store generated an impressive $8 million in 2024 alone. Furthermore, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington reported in April that during the first 14 months of Trump’s second term, his store introduced at least 600 new products, collectively valued at nearly $43,000. This ethics watchdog group criticized the situation, asserting, "This is an unprecedented level of monetization of the presidency, even by the standards of Trump’s own first term." The closure of the Tennessee store, therefore, signals a potential shift in the commercial landscape surrounding political memorabilia, perhaps reflecting broader trends in public engagement and economic sentiment.
