The diplomatic landscape between Bangladesh and India is currently fraught with tension, significantly impacted by the unresolved issue of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. On Sunday, Bangladeshi officials unequivocally stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would not undertake a state visit to India until New Delhi accedes to their long-standing request to extradite Hasina. This declaration directly links any potential high-level engagement to the resolution of this contentious matter.
The relationship between the two neighboring nations has been considerably strained since a tumultuous uprising in 2024 led to the downfall of Hasina’s government. Amidst widespread and often deadly anti-government protests, Hasina sought refuge in India, where she has remained since. Her situation is further complicated by her conviction in Bangladesh for crimes against humanity, a charge which carries the death penalty. Consequently, Dhaka has made persistent requests for her repatriation to face justice.
During a recent interaction with reporters, foreign ministry official A.K.M. Shahidul Karim addressed and dismissed persistent media speculation regarding a potential visit by Prime Minister Rahman to India in the coming week. Karim emphasized that a conducive environment is a prerequisite for such a high-level exchange. He explicitly stated, “We are of the view that a propitious environment needs to be created for the visit,” further adding, “To this end, we have urged the Indian authorities to expedite their efforts to extradite Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives.” India, for its part, has confirmed that Bangladesh’s extradition request is “under examination,” a phrase that offers little clarity on the timeline or likelihood of its fulfillment.
Prime Minister Rahman assumed office in February and has since embarked on official visits to Malaysia and China, notably bypassing India for his initial foreign engagements. This departure from the customary practice of Bangladeshi leaders prioritizing India for their inaugural overseas trip underscores the current diplomatic chill. While a recent meeting between India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Prime Minister Rahman fueled hopes of a breakthrough, subsequent statements from Bangladeshi officials suggest otherwise. Karim acknowledged that officials from both nations have been in communication regarding a potential visit, but he lamented that “the process has been vitiated by Sheikh Hasina’s open media interactions, despite her being a convict in crimes against humanity.”
Hasina, who once championed democracy but whose 15-year rule was increasingly criticized for its autocratic tendencies, defiantly vowed earlier this month to return to Bangladesh in December, even if it meant imprisonment. This public stance further complicates efforts to resolve the diplomatic impasse. Karim also articulated Bangladesh’s commitment to a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy. This approach, he explained, would be firmly rooted in principles of sovereignty and non-interference, while simultaneously seeking to foster mutually beneficial ties with India and other countries. The current impasse, however, clearly demonstrates that for Bangladesh, the issue of Sheikh Hasina’s extradition remains paramount in shaping its immediate diplomatic engagement with its powerful neighbor.
