Now It Will Be Sonic's Turn To Have A Gun In New Fortnite Update

The immensely popular live-service game, Fortnite, is preparing for a significant infusion of beloved video game characters, including the iconic speedster, Sonic the Hedgehog. The upcoming "Gaming Legends" season has been subtly teased, with the highly anticipated official trailer now providing a comprehensive look at what players can expect. This update marks another ambitious crossover for Fortnite, a title already renowned for its extensive collaborations with Saturday morning cartoons, real-life celebrities, and even esoteric literary figures like Thomas Pynchon characters.

The buzz surrounding which video game icons would make their way into the battle royale arena has been building for over a week. Prior to the full reveal, it was confirmed that Joker from Persona 5 would be joining the fray, continuing a trend of the Phantom Thieves appearing in other gaming universes. The official trailer, however, unveils an even broader roster of familiar faces and associated cosmetics. Fans can anticipate content inspired by Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, Tetris, Pac-Man, and even Epic Games’ own classic mascot, Jazz Jackrabbit. Dominating the spotlight, however, is Sonic the Hedgehog, shown sprinting through a rendition of the Green Hill Zone alongside Fortnite‘s default character, Jonesy.

Sonic’s inclusion has been something of an open secret, with Sega’s official social media channels preempting Epic’s trailer by promoting a tie-in comic featuring Shadow and Knuckles. A common question among fans has been how Sonic’s distinctive design would translate into the shooter’s aesthetic. Fortnite‘s consistent approach to its non-humanoid guest characters has been to adapt them in a somewhat exaggerated fashion, and Sonic is no exception. His limbs appear elongated to human proportions, while his head retains its familiar, cartoonishly large appearance, creating a visually striking and somewhat uncanny rendition of the character.

Historically, it was Shadow the Hedgehog who was depicted wielding firearms, a concept that, while popular at the time, has been met with evolving sentiments over the years. Now, in a significant shift, Sonic himself, alongside Knuckles, will be equipped with fully rendered weapons. With Doctor Eggman also confirmed for the update, it’s safe to assume where these characters will be directing their firepower when the update officially launches on August 20th. This influx of iconic characters promises to bring a fresh dynamic and an abundance of nostalgic content to the gaming landscape of Fortnite.
