Five among top 10 firms see market cap fall by Rs 1 lakh crore

The recent market cap of five of India’s top ten most valuable companies experienced a significant decline, shedding a combined total of Rs 1 lakh crore last week. This downturn occurred amidst a prevailing bearish sentiment across the domestic equities landscape. The technology giant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), bore the brunt of this erosion, facing the most substantial losses.

The broader market indices also reflected this negative trend. The Bombay Stock Exchange’s (BSE) benchmark Sensex, a key indicator of the Indian stock market’s health, saw a decrease of 490 points, or 0.6%. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) Nifty index, which represents the weighted average of 50 of the largest Indian companies listed on the NSE, dipped by 205 points, corresponding to a 0.8% reduction. According to market analyst Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking, several factors contributed to this cautious investor sentiment. These included the escalating prices of crude oil, a resurgence of geopolitical uncertainties globally, and a mixed bag of cues from international markets.

While some of the nation’s corporate behemoths, including Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), witnessed a reduction in their valuations, other prominent firms in the top ten managed to buck the trend. Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), and Hindustan Unilever emerged as the gainers, collectively adding an impressive Rs 55,149 crore to their market capitalization.

Delving into the specifics of the declines, TCS’s market capitalization shrank by Rs 34,263.3 crore, settling at approximately Rs 8.5 lakh crore. Reliance Industries (RIL) saw its valuation drop by Rs 31,869 crore, bringing its total to Rs 17.7 lakh crore. The State Bank of India (SBI) experienced a decrease of Rs 25,892 crore, leading to a market cap of Rs 9.9 lakh crore. HDFC Bank’s valuation edged lower by Rs 7,165 crore, reaching Rs 11.2 lakh crore, and ICICI Bank’s diminished by Rs 2,793 crore, placing its market cap at Rs 10.2 lakh crore.

Conversely, the firms that saw positive growth presented a contrasting picture. The valuation of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) surged by Rs 26,439 crore, reaching Rs 5.2 lakh crore. Bharti Airtel registered a substantial increase of Rs 20,592 crore, boosting its market cap to Rs 12.4 lakh crore. Bajaj Finance climbed by Rs 3,548.8 crore, bringing its valuation to Rs 6.8 lakh crore. Larsen & Toubro added Rs 2,491 crore, pushing its valuation to Rs 5.6 lakh crore, and Hindustan Unilever’s market cap went up by Rs 2,079 crore, settling at Rs 4.9 lakh crore.

Despite the recent fluctuations, Reliance Industries maintained its position as the most valued domestic firm. It was followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of India, in that order, underscoring their enduring influence within the Indian business landscape.
