The National Testing Agency (NTA) has mandated a re-examination for candidates who appeared in the UGC-NET June 2026 examination for English, Commerce, and Sociology. This significant decision comes after an expert committee meticulously reviewed the question papers and identified substantial flaws. The integrity of the testing process was compromised by numerous issues, including factual inaccuracies, typographical errors, and poor translations within the papers.
The re-test schedule has been announced, with the English paper set for September 9, from 9 AM to 12 noon, in Shift 1. The Commerce examination will follow on the same day, from 3 PM to 6 PM, during Shift 2. Subsequently, the Sociology paper will take place on September 10, also from 9 AM to 12 noon, in Shift 1. Crucially, the NTA has confirmed that candidates who previously sat for these three subjects will not incur any additional examination fees for the re-test.
The comprehensive investigation by the expert committee revealed a disconcerting array of errors that extended far beyond simple printing mistakes. These included the misspelled names of prominent scholars, incorrectly cited or distorted book titles, and ambiguously worded questions that could confuse even the most prepared candidates. Furthermore, the committee pinpointed grammatical errors, discrepancies in gender and number agreement, punctuation problems, and the use of non-standard terminology for well-established academic concepts. Perhaps most alarmingly, a significant number of questions were found to have been replicated directly from previous examinations, raising concerns about the originality and validity of the current papers. The NTA has acknowledged that question papers marred by such defects cannot be considered to meet the stringent standards required for a fair and equitable examination process.
This decision was not taken lightly but was prompted by a deluge of complaints from candidates who participated in the UGC-NET June 2026 examination, which was originally conducted between June 22 and 30 across 87 subjects. This examination is a critical gateway for individuals aspiring to secure Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), establish eligibility for Assistant Professor positions, and gain admission to PhD programs. For the candidates in the three affected subjects, this re-test translates to another period of intense preparation, potential travel expenses, and the inherent uncertainty that accompanies such a significant academic undertaking. While the NTA has waived the additional examination fees, the emotional and logistical burden on these candidates remains considerable.
Despite the necessary re-test for these specific subjects, the NTA has assured that the overall UGC-NET process for the remaining 84 subjects will proceed as planned. The results for these unaffected subjects will be declared according to the existing schedule. Furthermore, the agency has committed to ensuring that the allocation of JRF seats, the issuance of eligibility certificates for Assistant Professor positions, and PhD admissions will not experience delays due to this re-examination.
