Bank holidays this week: When and where will banks stay closed?

Planning your banking activities for August requires careful consideration of the upcoming holiday schedule. This month, numerous bank closures are anticipated across India, with specific dates varying by state due to the observance of diverse regional festivals and local traditions. These closures are not uniform nationwide, necessitating that customers verify their local holiday calendar before attempting to visit a branch.

For instance, this week, financial institutions in Tripura will be observing a holiday on August 19th, commemorating the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Beyond these special regional occasions, it is also important to remember that banks nationwide consistently remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, adhering to the Reserve Bank of India’s established holiday guidelines.

Looking ahead, the latter half of August presents several additional bank holidays:

  • August 25th: Banks in the states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will be observing a holiday. This closure is attributed to the celebrations of Milad-Un-Nabi, the first day of Onam, or Milad-i-Sherif, all commemorating the birthday of Prophet Muhammed.
  • August 26th: A significantly larger number of states will see their banks closed on this date. This includes Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. The reason for these widespread closures is the observance of Id-E-Milad, Baravafat, Milad-un-Nabi (all referring to the Birthday of Prophet Mohammad), and Thiruvonam.
  • August 28th: Banks in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh will be shut. These closures accommodate a range of celebrations including Raksha Bandhan, Pang-Lhabsol, the Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi, Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi, and Ayyankali Jayanthi.

It is crucial to understand that a bank holiday, while affecting physical branch operations, does not signify a complete suspension of all financial services. Customers retain full access to digital banking platforms such as internet banking, mobile banking applications, ATMs, and UPI for various transactions. These digital avenues allow for seamless fund transfers, bill payments, and general account management even when branches are closed.

However, services that inherently require in-person interaction at a branch, such as the processing of physical cheques, the issuance of demand drafts, or significant cash transactions, will be unavailable on these designated holidays. Therefore, individuals planning such critical transactions are strongly advised to schedule them in advance to avoid any inconvenience or delays.
