A temple stampede and a hotel fire in eastern India kill 14 and injure several

In a tragic turn of events that underscores recurring safety concerns during large religious gatherings in India, two separate incidents – a deadly temple stampede and a devastating hotel fire – claimed at least 14 lives and left numerous others injured in the eastern regions of the country. These events unfolded simultaneously on a Monday, casting a pall over the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan.

The temple stampede occurred in Bihar state, specifically near the revered Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai district. This tragedy unfolded as thousands of devout individuals had converged to offer prayers on the third Monday of Shravan, a period between July and August dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, marked by fasting, prayers, and vibrant monsoon festivals across the nation. Seven individuals tragically lost their lives, and over a dozen sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos. Civil official Shailendra Kumar confirmed the casualties and injuries, noting that those hurt were transported to a government hospital for immediate medical attention. The precise cause of the stampede remains under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest a frightening sequence of events. Around 6:30 AM, an electrical wire outside the temple premises reportedly snapped, triggering widespread panic among the worshippers who feared electrocution. This sudden surge of fear caused a section of the crowd control barricades to collapse, leading to a perilous crush where people fell over one another, as detailed by Kumar to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Hours earlier, in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, a catastrophic fire ripped through a four-story hotel in Tarapith, a significant temple town. The blaze ignited around 4:30 AM on the ground floor while most guests, many of whom were pilgrims visiting Tarapith to offer prayers at its major temple complex, including a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, were asleep. At least seven people perished in the inferno, and several others sustained critical injuries. Firefighters swiftly responded, bringing the conflagration under control, and the injured were rushed to a hospital. While some victims suffered severe burn injuries, others were treated for smoke inhalation and asphyxiation, according to the Press Trust of India report. Hotel management speculated that the fire might have originated near the reception area due to an electrical component in the building’s power supply system malfunctioning. Authorities have launched an investigation into this incident to ascertain the definitive cause.

These recent calamities serve as a grim reminder of the inherent dangers associated with large public assemblies in India, particularly during religious festivals. Instances of crowd crushes are regrettably frequent, often exacerbated by immense crowds, sometimes numbering in the millions, congregating in confined spaces with inadequate safety protocols and crowd management strategies. A stark illustration of this was the incident in January of the previous year, where at least 30 people died when tens of thousands of Hindus rushed to bathe in a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival, recognized as the world’s largest religious gathering. Another tragic event occurred in 2013 in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, where pilgrims attending a Hindu festival at a temple panicked over fears of a bridge collapse. This led to at least 115 individuals being crushed to death or drowning in the river below. Addressing these systemic issues of crowd control and emergency preparedness remains a critical challenge for authorities across India.
