India is significantly bolstering its strategic capabilities with the acquisition of advanced unmanned aerial systems. The Ministry of Defence recently finalized a crucial agreement to lease two MQ-9B SeaGuardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) from the prominent US defense contractor, General Atomics. This strategic move, valued at approximately Rs 1,943 crore, will provide the Indian Navy with these sophisticated drones for a period of 30 months, enhancing its maritime surveillance and defense capabilities. The contract signing ceremony took place in New Delhi, underscoring the importance of this deal for India’s national security interests.
The MQ-9B SeaGuardian HALE RPAS represents a significant leap in drone technology. These unmanned aerial vehicles are specifically designed for a broad spectrum of missions, encompassing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as precision strike operations. Each unit is outfitted with state-of-the-art sensors, advanced systems, and sophisticated payloads, enabling them to operate effectively for extended durations. With an impressive endurance of over 30 hours and the ability to fly at altitudes exceeding 40,000 feet, these drones can cover vast geographical areas, both maritime and terrestrial. Furthermore, the MQ-9B SeaGuardian is a versatile maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, equipped with a self-contained anti-submarine warfare mission kit, making it an invaluable asset for naval operations.
This lease agreement is part of a larger strategic initiative. India has already committed to a substantial $3 billion deal for the procurement of 31 MQ-9B drones from General Atomics for comprehensive tri-service use. Under this significant agreement, which was inked during the administration of President Joe Biden, the Indian Navy is slated to receive 15 MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones. Concurrently, the Indian Army and Air Force will each be equipped with eight units of the land attack and reconnaissance variants, known as SkyGuardian, further integrating these advanced capabilities across various branches of the armed forces. In a further commitment to self-reliance and maintenance capabilities, India has also signed a separate contract with General Atomics for performance-based logistics, ensuring depot-level maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for these RPAS within India.
The integration of these new drones is expected to profoundly bolster the Indian Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) capabilities. The Ministry of Defence has highlighted that these systems will deliver persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance coverage across extensive maritime zones. This enhanced capability is crucial for strengthening India’s capacity to effectively monitor and respond to evolving situations and threats throughout the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region, contributing significantly to regional stability and security.
