Exclusive: You Can Finally Buy a Fairphone—a Sustainable, Repairable Smartphone—in the US

Fairphone Aims to Disrupt US Smartphone Duopoly with Sustainable, Economical Alternative

New York, NY – As American consumers grapple with economic uncertainties and the frustration of planned obsolescence, Fairphone, the Dutch electronics company renowned for its ethical and repairable devices, is making an aggressive push into the US market. CEO Raymond van Eck sees Fairphone products as a compelling alternative for those feeling the pinch of rising prices and limited choice in a market dominated by Apple and Samsung.

"If you look to the US market, it’s heavily duopolistic with very little real consumer choice," van Eck told WIRED. He asserts that "Americans are exhausted by planned obsolescence, closed-box ecosystems, and expensive yearly upgrades," sentiments that resonate with a growing number of consumers.

The US smartphone market is notoriously challenging for new entrants, largely due to the pervasive influence of mobile carriers. According to a 2025 report from the International Data Corporation, carriers drive a staggering 66 percent of smartphone sales, making it nearly impossible for brands to succeed without their support. This has led to a mass exodus of manufacturers, with companies like OnePlus, HMD Mobile, Sony, and LG Mobile retreating from North America in recent years.

Undeterred, Fairphone is actively engaging with major carriers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to secure distribution for its devices. This strategic move is critical to overcoming the significant hurdle of carrier reliance in the US market.

While Fairphone’s hardware is powered by Google’s Android, the company also offers a unique version running Murena’s de-Googled /e/OS, priced at $699. Beyond software choice, Fairphone incorporates distinctive features designed for user control. For instance, the Fairphone (Gen 6+) includes a physical switch that enables "Fairphone Moments," a minimalist interface aimed at reducing digital distractions. Van Eck also hopes the Gen 6+’s improved performance will facilitate more advanced software features, including AI-powered capabilities that demand greater RAM.

Fairphone, however, is not immune to global supply chain challenges, including the ongoing memory crisis. Nevertheless, van Eck credits the company’s "deep relationships" with suppliers for its success in securing vital components.

Van Eck articulates a vision of synergy rather than compromise regarding its reliance on US technology. "We do not view our codependence on US technology as a compromise or a downside, but as a powerful synergy," he stated. "You could say we take the best of US innovation, which drives the industry performance, and we wrap it with European care for planet and people. This creates, I would say, a stronger product than either side could build in isolation."

This strategic shift, coupled with a newfound focus on product quality over solely its ethical mission, is yielding significant results. Fairphone is experiencing year-over-year growth for the fourth consecutive quarter, with phone shipments soaring by 74 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. Notably, 80 percent of Fairphone Gen 6 purchasers are new to the brand, indicating a successful expansion into a broader consumer base.

"We are really now expanding toward a more mainstream crowd," van Eck commented. "That is helping us tremendously and also giving a lot of confidence that we are really on the right path."

Despite the Gen 6+ arriving only a year after its predecessor, Fairphone remains committed to its established two-year product launch cycle, eschewing the yearly release model favored by many of its larger tech counterparts. This deliberate pace underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and empowering consumers to make long-term, conscious choices. American consumers now have the opportunity to buy a Fairphone, a sustainable, repairable smartphone, in the US.
