Football Legend Paul Scholes Receives Driving Ban After Double Conviction

MANCHESTER, UK – August 18, 2026 – Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been handed a six-month driving ban and significant financial penalties after being convicted in two separate court appearances last week. The legendary footballer, aged 51, faced charges stemming from two speeding incidents and subsequently failing to respond to police inquiries.

Scholes, celebrated for his illustrious career at Old Trafford and his 66 England caps, found himself in legal hot water following two instances where vehicles registered in his name were caught exceeding speed limits. The first incident occurred in March when Scholes’s Range Rover was clocked at 37mph in a 30mph residential zone in Cleckheaton during a late-night drive. West Yorkshire Police initiated a prosecution after the vehicle was identified.

The second offence dates back to November of last year, when a Mercedes, also registered to Scholes, was recorded travelling at 49mph in a 30mph zone on Mossley Road near Ashton-under-Lyne. Greater Manchester Police subsequently launched their own prosecution.

Crucially, the legal proceedings intensified due to Scholes’s failure to respond to two police letters requesting confirmation of the driver’s identity in connection with the speeding offences. These two criminal cases culminated in hearings held on consecutive days last week.

Scholes was prosecuted in his absence under the Single Justice Procedure, a streamlined process for less serious offences. Court officials confirmed that the former star did not enter pleas to either of the charges.

The outcome of these proceedings saw Scholes receiving a six-month driving ban, in addition to being ordered to pay a total of £1,472 in fines, court costs, and victim surcharges.

Documents obtained by the Press Association revealed further details of the incidents. The Cleckheaton speeding incident involving Scholes’s Range Rover occurred just after 11:30 PM on March 3rd on the A649 Halifax Road. In this case, police stated that Scholes did reply to a notice of intended prosecution, confirming he was indeed the driver. However, due to his status as a "totter" – meaning he already had penalty points on his licence – he was not eligible for an out-of-court settlement, such as a speed awareness course, and was thus facing an automatic ban.

For the second case, involving the Mercedes on the A670 Mossley Road, the speeding offence took place at 11:10 AM on November 14th last year. Police efforts to contact Scholes proved unsuccessful, with two letters sent to his home reportedly receiving "no reply." While Greater Manchester Police initially pursued the speeding allegation, they ultimately dropped this charge and proceeded with prosecuting Scholes for his failure to respond to the official letters.

On August 12th, at Bradford Magistrates’ Court, Scholes received the six-month driving ban related to the Cleckheaton speeding offence. He was also fined £220, ordered to pay £120 in costs, and an £88 victim surcharge. The following day, August 13th, at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, Scholes was handed a £660 fine, six penalty points on his licence, £120 in costs, and a £264 victim surcharge for failing to respond to police communications regarding the Mossley Road incident.

This series of events marks an unusual turn for one of English football’s most celebrated figures. Throughout his illustrious career, Paul Scholes played an astonishing 499 times for Manchester United, securing an impressive 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two Champions League trophies. His quiet demeanour on the pitch, often contrasted with his explosive talent, now sees him facing the consequences of traffic infringements and administrative oversight off the pitch.
