Grand Theft Auto VI Leaks Emerge Ahead of Official Netflix Premiere, Revealing Florida-Inspired Map and RPG Elements

Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI is reaching a fever pitch, but fans eager for a glimpse of the highly anticipated title may not have to wait until its official Netflix premiere later this month. Despite Rockstar Games’ stringent efforts to prevent information breaches following a significant 2022 incident, what appears to be legitimate gameplay footage and a detailed map of the game’s setting, Leonida, have reportedly surfaced online.

Rockstar Games is said to be actively issuing DMCA takedown notices to those sharing two minute-long gameplay clips and a screenshot of the Florida-inspired map. While the content itself cannot be directly shared, descriptions of the leaked material offer compelling insights into the next installment of the iconic franchise.

The leaked map of "Leonida" strongly suggests a vibrant, albeit distorted and compact, rendition of South Florida. Mirroring the structure of GTA V, the map prominently features a large urban center – Rockstar’s take on Miami – situated on the eastern coast. The western and northern regions are depicted with expansive green spaces, while numerous islands, large and small, are scattered across the map, with a cluster in the south strongly resembling the Florida Keys. The screenshot also displays various markers, including a home icon, a balaclava-clad face, vehicles, and intriguingly, an alligator, hinting at the diverse activities and wildlife players can expect.

One of the leaked clips spotlights Jason, one of the game’s dual protagonists, at a picturesque waterside residence. The presence of gym equipment on the balcony has drawn comparisons to the workout mechanics featured in GTA San Andreas. The footage shows Jason effortlessly vaulting over a ledge, running past a jetski, and then engaging in a brief basketball session. A notable detail is a "focus stat boost" appearing after a successful shot, suggesting the integration of RPG-like mechanics into the gameplay. While the HUD in this clip is minimalist, two dollar values in the top right corner maintain the familiar font from previous GTA titles, and a "focus bar" appears in the top left when Jason is handling the basketball. The building itself bears a striking resemblance to an official screenshot from GTA VI, identified as Jason’s safehouse on the game’s website, adding credence to the leak’s authenticity.

The second clip offers a more action-packed sequence. It begins with Jason seemingly about to cross a bridge towards an area called "The Keys" before executing a U-turn and initiating a minor collision. This leads to an altercation with a delivery truck driver, whom Jason ultimately incapacitates with a wrench. Each swing of the wrench is shown to deplete an "energy bar," a new gameplay element. This act results in a two-star wanted level, and a "devil icon" with a minus sign appears alongside a portrait of Jason, strongly indicating the return of an honor or karma system, similar to the acclaimed Red Dead Redemption series.

Further details from this clip include brief prompts for "loadout" and "storage" as Jason returns to his vehicle, suggesting players will have enhanced control over their weapon inventory and the ability to store items within their cars. Upon re-entering the vehicle, an icon displaying the car’s name and a gas meter appears, hinting at the potential introduction of fuel management for vehicles in GTA VI. The clip, which also features a minimap reminiscent of GTA V, concludes as Jason approaches an air ambulance.

While the leaked materials provide an exciting early look, it’s crucial to approach them with a degree of skepticism. Their age and potential for changes in the final game remain unknown, though the timing coincides with Rockstar’s server breach earlier this year. The alleged leaker claims to have released the footage and screenshot as a protest against Rockstar’s decision to include only a code in the physical edition of the game, rather than a disc. They are reportedly threatening further action against Rockstar and other publishers over alleged anti-consumer practices, including digital pre-orders and "fake single-player DLC."

Regardless of their source, these leaks offer a tantalizing glimpse into what Grand Theft Auto VI may have in store. Fans can look forward to an extended official look at the game, set to stream first on Netflix on August 27th, before its wider release on YouTube later that day. Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th.
