India on Brink of Dominant Victory in First Test Against Sri Lanka

Galle, Sri Lanka – India stands on the precipice of a commanding victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka after an exceptional fourth-day performance in Galle. Setting a formidable target of 372, India then ripped through the Sri Lankan top order, leaving the hosts reeling at 84/4 by stumps. Sri Lanka now faces an uphill battle, requiring a further 288 runs to achieve a highly improbable win, one of the toughest chases ever witnessed at this historic venue.

The cornerstone of India’s imposing lead was a dynamic and record-breaking innings from wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. True to his aggressive style, Pant blazed his way to 66 runs, reaching his fifty in just 53 balls. His innings was a captivating blend of trademark attacking strokeplay and valuable contributions under pressure. A towering six off Lahiru Kumara not only brought up his half-century but also marked a significant milestone: Pant became the first Indian and the quickest batsman in Test history to register 100 sixes. He forged a crucial 54-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja before eventually nicking Kumara behind.

Adding to India’s strong batting display was Devdutt Padikkal, who continued his impressive form from the first innings (where he scored 167). Padikkal contributed a fluent 44, confidently attacking Sri Lanka’s spinners before Keshara Nuwantha trapped him lbw. Earlier in the innings, KL Rahul chipped in with 35 runs, including two sixes off Prabath Jayasuriya, before being dismissed by the same spinner, ending a 65-run second-wicket stand with Padikkal.

India’s innings was not without its early jitters, with Yashasvi Jaiswal edging Asitha Fernando in the first over and Shubman Gill falling leg before to Jayasuriya. Despite losing several wickets towards the close of their innings, India had already established an unassailable advantage.

Sri Lanka’s chase began disastrously and quickly unravelled. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Nishan Fernando, while Prasidh accounted for Kamindu Mendis. The bowling hero of the session, Suthar, struck twice in quick succession. Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who came in as a concussion substitute for the injured Dinesh Chandimal, lasted just one delivery before being trapped lbw by Suthar. Suthar then claimed the wicket of Lahiru Udara, tightening India’s stranglehold on the Test match.

With rain forecast for the final day, India will be eager to take the remaining six wickets swiftly and secure a dominant 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. The exceptional performance across all departments leaves India firmly in control and poised for a resounding victory.
