Vietnam and India Elevate Strategic Partnership Amidst Shared Visions for the Future
HANOI – August 19, 2026 – Vietnam and India are poised for a new era of strengthened cooperation, as evidenced by a recent high-profile reception in Hanoi celebrating India’s 80th Independence Day. The event, attended by Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Lê Hoài Trung, highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations and their shared aspirations for a prosperous future.
Minister Trung, representing the Vietnamese government, delivered a congratulatory address, commending India on its remarkable achievements over eight decades of nation-building. He lauded India’s transformation into one of the world’s leading economies and a burgeoning hub for science and technology, significantly enhancing its regional and international standing. Trung expressed strong confidence in India’s continued progress towards its "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision, aiming to establish itself as a developed, prosperous, and modern nation by 2047.
Underscoring the enduring nature of the bilateral relationship, Minister Trung affirmed that Vietnam-India ties, initiated by venerated leaders President Hồ Chí Minh and Indian counterparts, have blossomed into a special and unwavering friendship. This bond, nurtured by successive generations, has yielded substantial and practical benefits. Notably, two-way trade has doubled over the past decade, while defence and security cooperation have become increasingly substantive and effective, reflecting a high degree of strategic trust between the two countries. Beyond governmental collaborations, robust people-to-people connections have flourished through shared cultural touchstones like Buddhism, yoga, tourism, education, and training initiatives.
The year 2026 marks a pivotal moment, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and India. A significant milestone in this evolving relationship was the state visit to India in May 2026 by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm. During this historic visit, the two nations officially elevated their ties to an enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership, guided by the profound spirit of “shared vision, strategic convergence, substantive cooperation.”
Minister Trung further elaborated on the complementary development trajectories of both nations. He noted that while India diligently pursues its Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda, Vietnam is equally committed to its own ambitious goal of becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045. This objective is underpinned by a new development model that prioritizes productivity, knowledge, science and technology, innovation, high-quality human resources, and modern governance.
The convergence of these distinct yet harmonious development visions and aspirations, Trung emphasized, provides ample room for mutual support and collaboration. He urged both sides to translate high-level political commitments into concrete cooperation programs that will deliver tangible benefits to their respective populations and address their growing development needs.
Echoing these sentiments, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Tshering W. Sherpa, also speaking at the reception, highlighted the profound civilizational ties and shared values of independence, freedom, and strategic autonomy that have historically connected the two peoples. The Ambassador described President Lâm’s state visit and the subsequent decision to upgrade bilateral ties as historic milestones, heralding a new chapter in the nations’ relationship. He reaffirmed India’s high priority placed on its relationship with Vietnam and expressed eagerness to work collaboratively, translating shared values, mutual trust, and their special friendship into increasingly practical cooperation and a future-oriented partnership.
This latest development underscores a dynamic and evolving relationship between Vietnam and India, built on a foundation of mutual respect and a shared commitment to progress and prosperity for their peoples.
