‘Magnificent’ Manav Suthar can serve India for a long time, says Shubman Gill | Cricket News

Manav Suthar Hailed as Future Star as India Dominates Sri Lanka in First Test

Galle, Sri Lanka – India’s captain, Shubman Gill, showered praise on young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar after his "magnificent" 10-wicket haul powered India to a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle. Gill believes the 24-year-old possesses the talent and temperament to serve Indian cricket for a long time.

Suthar was instrumental in India’s triumph, following up his impressive 4/76 in the first innings with a superb 6/55 in the second, culminating in match figures of 10/126. This performance marked his second consecutive five-wicket haul in as many Tests and etched his name in the record books as the youngest Indian to achieve a 10-wicket haul in an away Test match.

"He has been bowling magnificently. Looks like a very promising guy and someone who can play for India for a long time," Gill stated at the post-match presentation ceremony, highlighting Suthar’s potential.

Padikkal’s Composure Earns Player of the Match

Gill also reserved special commendation for Devdutt Padikkal, who was named Player of the Match for his exceptional batting display. Padikkal, stepping into the crucial No. 3 position due to Sai Sudharsan’s big toe injury, scored a magnificent 167 in the first innings and followed it up with a valuable 44 in the second.

"He was magnificent to watch. It’s important to get hundreds, but even after getting a hundred, he got a big one. Being in a competitive match and in a comfortable position…the way he batted and dominated in the second innings, was great to watch," Gill remarked, acknowledging Padikkal’s composure under pressure.

Padikkal, who amassed an aggregate of 211 runs in the match, downplayed the challenge posed by Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinners, citing the limited assistance offered by the Galle surface early in the game. "It was a bit of a slowish wicket, was not providing a lot of bite, so left-handed batters were able to negate the left-arm spinners. In the end, it was all about who came out on top with their skillset," Padikkal explained after receiving his award. "The wicket had its natural wear and tear, was a good Test wicket. Turned a lot more from the third day onwards."

India Secures Crucial WTC Points Amidst Weather Concerns

The victory earned India 12 crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points, easing some pressure on the side, though they currently remain fifth in the standings with 53.33 percentage points. Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh currently occupy the top four positions.

Gill, however, emphasized India’s unwavering focus on the ultimate goal: the WTC final. "That (WTC final) is the ultimate goal. Test wins do not come easy and this one is delightful," he affirmed.

The Indian captain admitted that there was uncertainty surrounding the completion of the Test due to impending rain, which arrived shortly after India secured victory. "It is a very satisfying win for us. We were in a comfortable position, but were not sure if the match would go on (because of the weather), but the team responded well."

Gill remained unfazed by India’s second-innings collapse to 193 runs, as the visitors aggressively pursued a declaration-style target. "Not really (bothered). We wanted to get (a lead) around 400 in the third innings. The wicket was not easy to score runs at will, so we were looking to play more aggressively. We were unsure as to how many overs we would be able to bowl on days four and five. In that process, we lost a few wickets but we were still in a comfortable position."
