India Edges Pakistan 5-3 in World Cup Thriller, Advances Despite Defensive Lapses

Amstelveen, Netherlands – India secured their passage to the next stage of the FIH World Cup with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in their final Pool D encounter. While the win was anticipated, the performance has raised concerns within the Indian camp, highlighting persistent defensive vulnerabilities that could hinder their medal aspirations. India beat Pakistan 5-3 but defensive woes raise alarm at World Cup.

The high-stakes clash in Amstelveen saw India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh net a brace, complemented by two brilliant goals from striker Abhishek and a crucial penalty stroke conversion by Hardik Singh. Despite the offensive prowess, the celebratory mood was tempered by a display that fell short of a team aiming for a podium finish. Pakistan, who exited the tournament with just one point, capitalized on Indian errors, making the contest far closer than many expected.

Familiar Foes, Familiar Flaws

The match exposed India’s recurring issues: a propensity to drop intensity, basic defensive mistakes within the D, and a tendency to concede cards. Had Pakistan not committed a few "schoolboy errors" of their own, a draw could have been a distinct possibility, sending an even stronger warning to Craig Fulton’s squad.

India started the game with characteristic vigour, rapidly penetrating Pakistan’s defense down the flanks. This sustained pressure led to an early breakthrough as Harmanpreet Singh converted the first penalty corner with a powerful low flick, beating goalkeeper Ali Raza. India’s dominance in the opening quarter was stark, boasting ten circle penetrations to Pakistan’s none.

The match also offered a glimpse of the artistic hockey of yesteryear, particularly through Abhishek’s exceptional performance. His skill was on full display as he served as both a feeder and a poacher. He doubled India’s lead in the 11th minute, expertly bringing down a pass from Harmanpreet, deftly maneuvering past two defenders, and slotting the ball home.

A Rollercoaster Second Quarter

Pakistan emerged with a more structured game plan in the second quarter, while India’s forwards increasingly relied on individual brilliance, with mixed results. However, India managed to extend their lead to 3-0 in the 21st minute. Following a blocked drag flick from Rajinder Singh, Harmanpreet reacted swiftly, creating space to slap the rebound into the net.

The comfortable three-goal cushion, however, was short-lived. India’s defensive shortcomings became apparent almost immediately as they failed to track back, allowing Pakistan to storm into their circle. A poorly dealt-with shot from Moin Shakeel by Suraj Karkera led to Hannan Shahid converting the rebound, reducing the deficit.

The see-saw battle continued with Abhishek restoring India’s three-goal advantage. He latched onto a pass from Jugraj Singh at the top of the circle, skillfully navigated the defense, and scored from a narrow angle. Yet again, Pakistan responded almost instantaneously after Sumit conceded a penalty corner, allowing Sufyan Khan to find the net.

Holding On for the Win

India re-emerged strongly after the break, with Hardik Singh converting a penalty stroke to make it 5-2, seemingly putting the game out of reach.

However, Pakistan, fueled by a renewed sense of urgency, pressed hard in the final quarter. Shahid won a one-on-one duel with Karkera, once again narrowing the gap to 5-3. Despite the persistent pressure, India managed to maintain their defensive shape in the closing stages, preventing Pakistan from making any further inroads and securing the victory.

Looking Ahead

India now joins England and Pool A toppers, hosts Netherlands, in the next round. The final spot in this four-team group will be filled by either Argentina or New Zealand. While the win ensures progression, the Indian coaching staff will undoubtedly be scrutinizing the defensive lapses as they prepare for the tougher challenges ahead in their quest for World Cup glory.

Match Result: India: 5 (Harmanpreet Singh 5, 21, Abhishek 11, 24, Hardik Singh 35) bt Pakistan: 3 (Hannan Shahid 22, 46, Sufyan Khan 24).
