From Rebel Kid to NYU Stern: Apoorva Makhija Embraces New York Chapter Amidst Self-Discovery
New York City, USA – Apoorva Makhija, the dynamic content creator and social media personality widely recognized as The Rebel Kid, has traded the bustling world of Indian digital fame for the academic corridors of New York University’s Stern School of Business. Enrolling in an MBA program, Makhija’s bold move marks a significant pivot in her career, driven by a desire for both personal growth and a strategic return to the Indian market with her own direct-to-consumer brand.
This transatlantic shift comes more than a year after Makhija found herself embroiled in a major controversy. Her appearance on Samay Raina’s ‘India’s Got Latent’ took an unexpected turn when an ill-judged joke concerning a contestant’s mother ignited widespread backlash, leading to multiple FIRs filed against her under the IT Act.
Now 25, and fresh off her appearance in ‘Lock Upp’ Season 2, Makhija remains remarkably unrepentant about her past. In a candid interview with Hindustan Times, she declared, "I’ve apologised and taken accountability whenever I’ve been wrong. I don’t regret any of my decisions. I genuinely think it’s all part of the plot. I get to live this absolutely crazy life where almost everything I do gets an extreme reaction."
While acknowledging the repercussions of her impulsive nature, Makhija views her past missteps as integral to her current journey. "My impulsiveness has definitely come at a cost sometimes. But I don’t think I would go back and erase any of it, because without those mistakes, I wouldn’t be the person I am right now or be standing at this point in my life." She elaborated, "Every mistake I’ve made, every bad decision, every difficult situation has somehow led me to exactly where I am today, moving to New York, trying to figure out my purpose, searching for meaning, and asking myself what more I want to do with my life."
Beyond career aspirations, Makhija’s move to the US is deeply personal. It’s a conscious effort to detach from the relentless demands of maintaining an online persona. "I’m moving to the US partly to get away from this constant pressure to stay relevant, reinvent yourself, figure out what you have to say next, and keep maintaining an online persona all the time. I think somewhere along the way, I’ve genuinely forgotten who I am when I’m not being The Rebel Kid."
The weight of public scrutiny, she admits, is a heavy burden, yet she finds a unique beauty in it. "It feels like a lot of responsibility, and sometimes it feels like no matter what I do, somebody is going to criticize it. But at the same time, that is also the beauty of my life."
Regarding a potential return to Bollywood, where she made her acting debut in ‘Nadaaniyan’ (2025) and appeared in several web shows, Makhija is unequivocal. "I see myself coming back to India, but no, I don’t see myself building a career in Bollywood."
Instead, her focus lies firmly on entrepreneurship. The MBA, Makhija explains, is a deliberate step to bridge the gaps in her business acumen. "Over the last few years, I’ve sold products for different businesses through my content. But there was a huge part of building a business that I didn’t understand well, like operations and supply chain, which determine whether a company survives." She aspires to move beyond merely being the face of a brand, aiming to grasp "operations, supply chain, unit economics, margins, and all the less glamorous things that actually determine whether a company survives."
Apoorva Makhija first captivated national attention with her explosive presence on ‘India’s Got Latent,’ further solidifying her larger-than-life image on ‘Lock Upp’ Season 2 and ‘The Traitors.’ As she embarks on this new chapter in New York, the multi-faceted personality continues to redefine her narrative, proving that even The Rebel Kid can find her true calling amidst the world of business and self-discovery.
