Emraan Hashmi’s ‘Awarapan 2’ Shatters Box Office Records, But It Was an Emotional Bet for Producer Vishesh Bhatt
Mumbai, India – The recently released sequel, Awarapan 2, has taken the box office by storm, marking a monumental success for actor Emraan Hashmi as his highest-earning film to date. Yet, behind this triumph lies a story of emotional conviction, initial hesitation, and a producer’s unwavering belief in a character’s enduring appeal. Producer Vishesh Bhatt recently offered an insightful look into the journey of bringing this much-anticipated film to life, revealing that its success was far from a foregone conclusion.
An Emotional Decision: The Genesis of ‘Awarapan 2’
In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, Vishesh Bhatt unequivocally stated that the decision to create Awarapan 2 was "an emotional decision." He elaborated, "I think we followed a lot of things emotionally, which probably converted. That’s why the audience feels that way. Creative came from the emotional, and then comes the business.” This philosophy, he suggests, resonated deeply with audiences, transforming what could have been a purely commercial venture into a heartfelt cinematic experience.
Resurrecting Shivam: The Enduring Appeal of a Broken Man
The original Awarapan, released in 2007, was a commercial disappointment despite later achieving cult status. However, the character of Shivam, portrayed by Emraan Hashmi, captivated a dedicated fanbase. Bhatt explained his decision to revive Shivam, emphasizing the character’s profound depth. "There were so many layers and so much depth in that character that we had to bring him. He is a broken man, and we have all taken his pain for 18-19 years."
Vishesh Films has a storied history with successful sequels and has even been credited with pioneering the ‘spiritual successor’ trend in Hindi cinema with franchises like Raaz, Aashiqui, and Jism. However, for Awarapan, Bhatt chose a different path, directly continuing Shivam’s narrative. He recalled the skepticism surrounding the decision: "People would ask, ‘You have so many franchises. Why Awarapan 19 years later?’"
Bhatt credits the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic for his renewed focus on emotionally resonant storytelling. "I said it actually came from feeling a lack of emotions connecting to the audience in me during Covid. Those 2-3 years, there was a lot of at-home watching, and a lot of things were being made for that. But I felt that when the cinemas open, what would I want to go and see? I felt drama was missing. Everything is being mounted with VFX and grand scale. We have done the same things here, but to support the drama. Everything looked like a very clever cover-up for lack of drama."
Emraan Hashmi’s Initial Reservations and a Shifting Market
Perhaps surprisingly, even the film’s lead, Emraan Hashmi, harbored reservations about an Awarapan sequel when Bhatt first pitched the idea years ago. "Jannat came just after Awarapan, and a lot of learnings from why Awarapan didn’t work went into Jannat. And that was a success," Bhatt recounted. "Emraan said Awarapan is a beautiful film, but our hearts did break when it didn’t do well. So, why not Jannat? That is close to you, and it worked. It’s almost obvious to me, forget the market, that we would take that forward. But, I said I am stuck on Awarapan."
The tide began to turn with the growing trend of re-released films finding success at the box office. "When the re-release of films that had tanked started doing well, I felt like I was onto something. Emraan Hashmi also softened his stance on the market," the filmmaker shared, indicating a renewed belief in the commercial viability of a film that had initially faltered.
A Star-Studded Cast and a Strong Opening
Announced last year, Awarapan 2 premiered in theaters on August 14, strategically timed just before Independence Day. Despite facing competition from Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, the film secured a robust opening, signaling its potential for widespread appeal. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film boasts a formidable cast including veteran actress Shabana Azmi, Disha Patani, and Suvinder Vicky, further enhancing its cinematic draw.
The success of Awarapan 2 stands as a testament to the power of emotional storytelling and the enduring connection between audiences and characters that resonate deeply, even years after their initial introduction. Vishesh Bhatt’s unwavering faith, coupled with a nuanced understanding of the evolving cinematic landscape, has not only revived a cult classic but has also delivered a record-breaking hit for Emraan Hashmi.
