"Bandar," Bobby Deol’s Critically Acclaimed Drama, Set for ZEE5 Premiere Addressing #MeTooForMen Dialogue
Mumbai, India – Following its recent theatrical run, Bobby Deol’s powerful drama, "Bandar," is poised for its digital debut, streaming exclusively on ZEE5 starting August 28th. The film, directed by the visionary Anurag Kashyap, delves into the complex and often uncomfortable conversation surrounding the #MeTooForMen movement, exploring the devastating impact of accusations on a man’s life before the truth has a chance to emerge.
"Bandar" centers on a male protagonist whose world unravels after being accused by a woman. The narrative critically examines how public opinion, intense media scrutiny, and societal judgment can swiftly overwhelm an individual, leading to a profound personal crisis.
For Bobby Deol, this project marked a significant departure from his usual roles, pushing him far beyond his comfort zone. In an ANI report, Deol expressed the profound impact the role had on him. "The character demanded a lot from me, not just as an actor, but as a person. I had to let go of my inhibitions, trust the process, and fully surrender to Anurag’s vision," he stated.
Deol praised Kashyap’s unique storytelling approach, highlighting its unconventional nature. "What I love about Anurag’s storytelling is that he never takes the obvious route. He encourages you to explore the uncomfortable, the unexpected, and that’s what made this journey so rewarding," he added. He described the experience of portraying the character as both "challenging and liberating," expressing his hope that the ZEE5 premiere will provide the film with the wider audience it merits, allowing more viewers to engage with its distinctive narrative.
Director Anurag Kashyap echoed Deol’s sentiments, emphasizing the film’s courage in tackling difficult societal questions. "What drew me to this story was its willingness to ask difficult questions, including one that society is often uncomfortable confronting: can men be victims too?" Kashyap explained. He underlined the film’s objective to move beyond simplistic narratives, urging audiences to confront the "uncomfortable grey areas" that are prevalent in real life. "It asks whether we are truly willing to listen before we judge and whether our understanding of victimhood, truth and empathy is sometimes influenced by our own assumptions," he elaborated.
Kashyap lauded Deol’s captivating performance, noting his complete immersion in the character. "The film is anchored by some exceptional performances, especially from Bobby, who completely immersed himself in the character and brought a vulnerability and intensity that the role demanded," he remarked. Despite its journey thus far, Kashyap believes the film’s story remains "relevant and worthy of discussion," expressing his anticipation for "Bandar" to reach a broader audience on ZEE5 and spark continued dialogue.
In addition to Bobby Deol, "Bandar" boasts a talented ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, and Saba Azad in pivotal roles. The film’s imminent digital release promises to ignite crucial conversations surrounding contemporary societal issues and the complexities of human experiences.
