FromSoftware Still Committed to Single-Player Experiences Despite Recent Multiplayer Shift
For fans of FromSoftware’s sprawling, solitary adventures, the recent pivot toward multiplayer might have sparked concern about the studio’s future direction. However, president and iconic director Hidetaka Miyazaki has moved to reassure players, confirming that the studio remains deeply committed to single-player experiences.
In a recent interview with IGN, Miyazaki addressed the perceived shift in strategy following the back-to-back development of Elden Ring: Nightreign and the upcoming The Duskbloods. While these two titles have placed a significant focus on multiplayer, Miyazaki insisted that this was purely coincidental rather than a deliberate departure from the studio’s legacy.
"It’s funny because there was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other," Miyazaki noted. He clarified that while Nightreign was helmed by director Junya Ishizaki, the focus on multiplayer in both projects was a matter of timing rather than a calculated change in company philosophy.
"It’s not necessarily some big reveal saying that this is the direction we plan to go moving forward," he added. "We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did."
The "Single-Player Itch"
Miyazaki admitted that while the team found the creative challenges of multiplayer engaging, the process has actually strengthened his desire to return to solo-focused titles. "The more you work on something multiplayer for a long time, if anything, it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again," he explained.
Since the 2022 release of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s output has leaned into more competitive PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment) territory. The Duskbloods, a forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, represents a unique outlet for the studio. Miyazaki revealed that the game serves as a collection of mechanics and ideas that simply didn’t have a natural home within the constraints of a traditional single-player narrative.
A New Partnership with Nintendo
The development of The Duskbloods has been defined by a close collaboration with Nintendo. According to Miyazaki, Nintendo’s involvement has been instrumental in refining the game’s accessibility—an area where FromSoftware has historically been more hands-off.
"The onboarding tutorials and making sure players understand how the game works… is something we’ve historically not been super great at conveying instantly," Miyazaki acknowledged. "In this case, Nintendo is definitely the right partner for better conveying that information in a way that is understandable to the player."
Looking Ahead
As fans prepare for the release of The Duskbloods, the studio is currently hosting a series of network tests running from August 21 to August 24. While an official release date remains shrouded in mystery, the game is expected to launch later this year.
As the industry turns its eyes toward the massive autumn release window—most notably the highly anticipated arrival of GTA 6 in November—FromSoftware’s ability to balance its experimental multiplayer side projects with its revered single-player roots will be a key storyline to watch in the coming months.
