From Shadows to Strikes: How Asobo Studio Reinvented A Plague Tale with ‘Resonance’
For years, the A Plague Tale franchise was defined by the harrowing, stealth-focused journeys of Amicia and Hugo. But with the release of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, developer Asobo Studio is trading quiet corners and shadow-hiding for something far more kinetic.
In a recent deep dive into the development of the new title, the team behind the series revealed how they moved away from the formula of Innocence and Requiem to build an all-out action-adventure experience.
A New Protagonist, A New Direction
Following the definitive conclusion of Hugo’s story in Requiem, Asobo co-founder David Dedeine noted that a direct sequel was never in the cards. Instead, the team looked to a familiar face to anchor a new chapter: Sophia.
"We were in love with Sophia," Dedeine explained. "Her personality is much more active, and somehow more aggressive, compared to our previous lead, Amicia. Since we wanted to focus on more combat-oriented and active gameplay, she was a great match."
By shifting the perspective to this seasoned plunderer, the studio felt empowered to pivot toward a more combat-heavy experience, allowing for faster-paced traversal and direct player engagement that moves well beyond the "hide-or-die" mechanics of its predecessors.
Engineering Agility and Adventure
The transition to action-adventure brought significant technical hurdles. Level designer Vincent Trinel highlighted the shift in player movement as a primary challenge.
In previous entries, environments were meticulously crafted with explicit indicators—often white markings—to guide players through specific, context-sensitive climbable paths. Resonance breaks that mold entirely. "The player can jump and climb anywhere," Trinel said. "The challenge is the opposite now; we have to be careful about where the player can go and restrict that a bit while still giving them maximum freedom."
With the introduction of a grappling hook and fluid traversal systems, players are no longer confined to scripted sequences; they are now tasked with navigating complex environments and engaging in high-stakes combat using agility and reflexes.
Preserving the ‘Plague Tale’ Identity
Despite the shift to action, the team remains deeply committed to the series’ DNA. Lead writer Carol Ann Bañuls emphasized that while the Macula manifests in a new, mysterious way—linked to the forgotten Minoan world—the emotional weight remains.
"The themes are the beating heart of the Plague Tale franchise," said actress Anna Demetriou, who provides the voice for Sophia. "They are pretty heavy but relatable."
Visually, players can expect the same high-fidelity craftsmanship that made the previous games so striking. Character artist Marco Puricelli confirmed that the studio’s signature "painting-like" vistas, thick volumetric fog, and dramatic lighting—hallmarks of the franchise’s visual identity—will return to ground the new, more action-packed gameplay.
