OpenAI Brings Deep Apple Messages Integration to ChatGPT for Mac

OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to its ChatGPT desktop application for macOS, introducing a powerful new plugin that bridges the gap between AI and your personal communication. The update, which includes a suite of productivity-focused features, now allows users to interact directly with Apple’s Messages app, including iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations.

Seamless Messaging Integration

The new Apple Messages plugin is designed to streamline workflows by allowing ChatGPT to read, search, and draft messages directly from the desktop interface. Available across all plan tiers—including ChatGPT Work and Codex—the tool essentially turns your AI assistant into a personal messaging aide.

Whether you are using ChatGPT to summarize a recent thread or draft a response to a colleague or friend, the integration aims to reduce the friction of switching between apps. However, OpenAI has implemented strict safety guardrails. By default, the AI requires explicit user approval before sending any message to a recipient, ensuring that users maintain full control over their correspondence.

OpenAI has cautioned users regarding "persistent approval," a setting that allows the AI to send messages without prompts. The company advises users to review the risks associated with this feature and provides clear instructions on how to revoke access if necessary. Note that this integration is currently exclusive to Apple silicon Macs and does not support Intel-based machines.

Expanding Collaborative Features

Beyond the Messages integration, the latest update introduces several features aimed at improving collaboration and cross-device continuity:

  • Pinned Chat Sync: Important conversations will now stay synchronized across the ChatGPT desktop app and mobile devices, ensuring your most vital threads are always within reach, whether you are on your Mac or your iPhone.
  • Read-Only Snapshots: Users can now generate a static, read-only "snapshot" of a local Codex thread. These snapshots are ideal for sharing processes or context with teammates without the risk of the content changing as the original conversation evolves.
  • Site Co-Editing: For those utilizing ChatGPT’s web hosting capabilities, the platform now supports multi-user collaboration. Workspace members can invite others to co-edit content and database data, with owners retaining granular control over access and publication rights.

Broader Availability

As OpenAI continues to iterate on its desktop experience, it is also expanding access to its "Computer History" feature. Initially released last week, the tool—which allows the AI to reference past activities—is now rolling out to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users across the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.

The update is part of a larger push by OpenAI to make its platform more than just a chatbot, evolving it into a system-integrated utility. For users interested in exploring these new capabilities, the ChatGPT update is available now via the official desktop application for macOS.
