Google Introduces AI-Powered Customization for Discover Feed
Google is handing the reins of its recommendation algorithm back to the user. The tech giant has announced a significant update to its Google app that will allow users to actively shape their Google Discover feed by simply describing their interests in natural language.
A Conversational Approach to Curation
Starting in the "coming days," users will notice a new option hidden within the three-dot menu on their Discover feed. Tapping this feature launches a chatbot-style interface designed to act as an assistant for your content preferences.
Rather than relying solely on automated patterns derived from search history and app usage, users can now provide direct input. If you want more coverage on niche hobbies, specific technological developments, or local news, you can describe those interests to the AI. The system will confirm your requests and outline the types of content it will prioritize moving forward. If the AI doesn’t quite hit the mark on the first try, you have the flexibility to provide additional context or refine your instructions before hitting the “Refresh your feed” button to see the immediate impact.
Joining the AI Feed Revolution
This shift toward "human-in-the-loop" curation signals a broader trend across the tech industry. As platforms move away from opaque, purely engagement-based algorithms, many have turned to generative AI to help users curate their own digital experiences. Google’s latest move follows similar initiatives from industry peers, including YouTube, Instagram, Bluesky, and X, all of which are increasingly allowing users to influence their timelines through direct AI prompts or interactive feedback mechanisms.
Beyond Discover: News and Preferred Sources
The Discover update is part of a wider suite of personalization features Google is rolling out to improve user agency. The company also announced that users of the Google News app on Android will gain the ability to personalize their daily audio briefings, allowing for a more tailored news-listening experience.
Additionally, Google is streamlining how users prioritize their favorite publishers. The "Preferred Sources" feature, which already helps surface content from trusted outlets within "Top Stories," AI Overviews, and AI Mode, is getting an upgrade. Publishers will now be able to integrate an interactive "Preferred Sources" button directly onto their websites. This allows readers to quickly add an outlet to their list of preferred sources without ever needing to navigate away from the content they are currently reading.
As Google continues to integrate AI into its core platforms, these changes represent a move toward a more transparent and user-directed information ecosystem—one where the AI functions as a tool for personal preference rather than a black-box algorithm.
