Foundation Complete: Landmark Artificial Energy Island Reaches Key Milestone

The construction of the world’s first artificial energy island has achieved a critical engineering milestone. TM Edison, a consortium comprising industry leaders DEME and Jan De Nul, has successfully installed the 23rd and final caisson, effectively completing the foundation works for the ambitious Princess Elisabeth Island project.

Commissioned by the Belgian transmission system operator Elia, the Princess Elisabeth Island represents a historic leap forward in offshore energy infrastructure. Designed to serve as a high-voltage hub, the island will play a pivotal role in linking Belgium’s second offshore wind zone to the mainland electrical grid, while simultaneously creating the infrastructure necessary for future international interconnections, including potential links to the United Kingdom.

A Feat of Heavy Marine Engineering

The completion of the island’s perimeter is the result of one of the most complex logistical operations in modern marine construction. The 23 concrete caissons, each boasting an impressive weight of approximately 22,000 tons, were fabricated in Vlissingen. Their transport and precise offshore installation required state-of-the-art technical coordination and specialized maritime equipment, marking a signature achievement for the DEME and Jan De Nul partnership.

These massive structures now form a robust protective ring, safeguarding the island against the challenging conditions of the North Sea while providing the structural integrity required for the future electrical substation.

Sustainability at the Core

Beyond its primary function as a renewable energy hub, the project is setting new benchmarks for environmental integration. In a significant move toward nature-inclusive design, the consortium has deployed specially engineered rock structures around the perimeter of the island. These structures have been seeded with young oysters, a proactive measure intended to foster the development of artificial reefs and promote marine biodiversity within the area.

Looking Ahead

With the foundation now secure, the Princess Elisabeth Island project is transitioning into its next critical stage. The focus will shift toward filling the interior of the caisson ring with sand, creating the stable landmass required to support the island’s complex electrical infrastructure.

Once fully operational, the island will be instrumental in transporting large volumes of offshore wind energy, helping to stabilize the power grid and supply green electricity to thousands of homes and businesses across the region. As Europe accelerates its transition to carbon neutrality, the Princess Elisabeth Island stands as a testament to the innovative power of collaborative marine engineering.
