"I’ll Always Love It to Death": Bruce Campbell Confirms Permanent Retirement from Ash Williams Role
For over four decades, Bruce Campbell has been synonymous with the chainsaw-wielding, deadite-slaying hero Ash Williams. However, the legendary actor has officially confirmed what many fans have long suspected: his time playing the iconic character has come to an end.
Following a viral social media discourse regarding his future in the franchise, Campbell took to his platform to provide clarity, apologizing to fans for not being more transparent about his departure sooner. He confirmed that, for all intents and purposes, he "tapped out" of the role following the conclusion of the Starz television series Ash vs Evil Dead, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018.
Why the ‘Evil Dead’ Icon is Hanging Up the Chainsaw
Addressing the confusion surrounding his recent absence from on-screen performances in the franchise, Campbell explained that his decision was driven by both physical limitations and a shifting focus in his career.
"Apologies if this news seems new. It’s hard to communicate everything with everyone," Campbell wrote. "Mostly, the reasons were ability and interest, in equal measure. I didn’t want Ash to be compromised by declining skills, and as a borderline geezer, my interests have diverged."
Despite his retirement from the role, the actor expressed deep affection for the series that launched his career, adding, "I’ll always love Evil Dead to death—literally." To punctuate his statement, Campbell shared nostalgic photos, including a snapshot of his production chair from the Ash vs Evil Dead set and a classic image of himself in full Ash Williams regalia.
A Legacy Spanning Decades
Bruce Campbell first introduced audiences to Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s low-budget horror masterpiece The Evil Dead in 1981. The film’s cult success led to a legendary trilogy that included Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992). Beyond the main films, Campbell reprised the role for a brief post-credits cameo in the 2013 reboot and voiced the character in several video game adaptations.
While he has stepped away from playing Ash on camera, Campbell has remained a vital part of the franchise’s creative evolution. He has served as an executive producer on recent hits like Evil Dead Rise (2023) and the upcoming Evil Dead: Burn. His only recent contribution to the screen was a subtle voiceover cameo in Evil Dead Rise, where he played a troubled priest.
Moving Beyond the Deadites
While fans will surely miss Campbell as the face of the series, the actor continues to boast an impressive and diverse career. Outside of his horror roots, he has become a staple of pop culture, appearing in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sky High, and lending his voice to animated hits like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
As Campbell transitions fully into his role as a producer for the Evil Dead universe, he leaves behind a legacy as one of horror cinema’s most beloved and charismatic leads—a hero whose chin, bravado, and iconic one-liners cemented his place in film history.
