Cobblers Strengthen Forward Line with Signing of Leicester City Striker Nathan Opoku

Northampton Town have bolstered their attacking options with the permanent signing of pacey forward Nathan Opoku from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian, who is capable of operating across the entire forward line, has committed his future to the club by putting pen to paper on a three-year deal. Opoku becomes the 10th arrival at Sixfields during what has been a busy summer transfer window for the Cobblers, joining recent recruits Matty Warhurst and Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh in the squad.

Opoku’s move to Northampton represents a significant addition to the manager’s arsenal. Speaking on his decision to join the club, the striker noted: “I feel this is the time for a new challenge for me. I spoke to the manager here, he told me how he feels I can impact the team and I believe I am a good fit for what he is trying to do here, and that’s why I chose to come to Northampton."

The forward is no stranger to the rigors of English football, particularly in the fourth tier. Reflecting on his previous experience, he added, “I know what League Two is all about. I had a good spell on loan at Newport last season and hopefully I can hit the ground running here.”

The 6ft tall striker brings a wealth of international and diverse experience to the side. After representing Ghana at the youth level, Opoku rose to prominence through the American college system, playing a pivotal role in Syracuse University’s historic first NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship, where he found the back of the net 11 times in 25 appearances.

Following his success in the States, he signed for Leicester City before gaining valuable European experience on loan with OH Leuven in the Belgian top flight, where he scored five goals. His most recent campaign saw him thrive during a loan spell with Newport County during the 2025/26 season. Opoku finished the term as the Exiles’ top scorer, netting six goals across 16 starts.

As the club works to integrate their latest arrival, officials confirmed that the transfer remains subject to the final approval of a work permit.

With the squad continuing to take shape, the arrival of such a versatile and proven talent marks a significant piece of business for the Cobblers as they look to build on their momentum heading into the new season.
