Investigation Launched After Fireworks Targeted at Police During North Shields Vigil

A woman has been arrested following a night of anti-social behaviour in North Tyneside, during which fireworks were launched at police vehicles.

Northumbria Police were called to the Waterville Road area of North Shields at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening following reports of a public disturbance. The disorder reportedly occurred during a vigil held in memory of a teenager, an event which officials have confirmed was organised without the involvement or consent of the deceased’s family.

The situation escalated rapidly, with witnesses reporting that individuals in attendance began setting off fireworks, specifically targeting them at arriving police patrol vehicles. In addition to the firework attacks, several small fires were ignited in the vicinity, causing alarm to the local community.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed that officers managed to bring the situation under control, adding that no injuries were reported during the incident. The fires were successfully extinguished shortly after they were ignited.

"We are investigating the disorder and have arrested a woman in connection with the report on suspicion of a public order offence," the spokesperson said. "She remains in police custody, and further arrest enquiries are ongoing."

Authorities have used the incident to issue a stern reminder regarding the conduct of public gatherings. "We would ask that anyone looking to hold memorial events in any of our communities does so respectfully and with consideration for other members of the public at all times," the police statement added. "They are not a means to commit crime or take part in disorder."

The incident has drawn significant local concern, and investigators are now urging members of the public to come forward with any footage or information that could assist in identifying those involved in the disorder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police via the live chat or report forms on their official website, or by sending a direct message on social media. Members of the public are requested to quote reference number NP-20260820-0993 when providing details.
