Tragedy in Visakhapatnam: Six-Year-Old’s Death Following Teacher’s Assault Sparks National Outrage

VISAKHAPATNAM, India – The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has been plunged into mourning and anger following the tragic death of a six-year-old student, who collapsed and died shortly after being physically assaulted by his teacher. The incident, which occurred in a classroom in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, has reignited a fierce national debate regarding the prevalence and dangers of corporal punishment in Indian schools.

The victim, identified by local media as Pranay Tej, was captured on classroom security footage being confronted by a female teacher. In the harrowing clip, the teacher is seen grabbing the young boy by his clothing before delivering a forceful slap to his face. Moments after the assault, the child collapsed, leading to his untimely death.

Official Response and Legal Proceedings

The visual evidence, which has been verified by news outlets, prompted immediate intervention from the state government. Nara Lokesh, the Minister of Education and IT for Andhra Pradesh, expressed his personal and professional condemnation of the incident.

“As a father, I can’t get over what happened to little Pranay Tej. I cannot imagine the pain his parents are going through,” Lokesh wrote in a statement posted to social media. “Corporal punishment has no place in our schools. No child should ever be subjected to violence in the name of discipline.”

Lokesh confirmed that he has established a high-level committee to investigate the matter. The state government has pledged to pursue legal action against both the individual teacher and the school’s management for their failure to provide a safe environment for students.

Investigation Underway

Local police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following a formal complaint filed by the boy’s father. Inspector Pudi Vara Prasad stated that the child’s body was released to the family following the completion of an inquest and post-mortem examination.

“Once all relevant reports are received, we will determine the exact cause of death,” Inspector Prasad noted.

The victim’s father, distraught by the sudden loss, told NDTV that his son had been in high spirits when he left for school that morning. “He insisted on going to school,” he recalled, highlighting the senselessness of the tragedy.

A Persistent Crisis

Despite being officially prohibited in schools across India, corporal punishment remains a systemic issue. A 2018 study conducted by the NGO Agrasar revealed that approximately 80 percent of children in low-income schools across the country have experienced physical disciplinary measures at the hands of their teachers.

Palla Srinivasa Rao, the Andhra Pradesh state president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), assured the public that the government is treating the case with the utmost urgency. "The government has reacted appropriately," Rao said. "A committee has been formed, and based on their findings, we will ensure strict action is taken."

As the investigation continues, the death of Pranay Tej has served as a grim reminder of the urgent need for systemic reform in classroom management policies to ensure that no other child becomes a victim of such violence.
