Fresh Claims Emerge as Deepika Padukone’s Exit from ‘Spirit’ Remains a Subject of Industry Debate
The professional fallout between Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga continues to make headlines, months after her departure from the ambitious pan-India project Spirit. What began as a high-profile casting choice has devolved into a bitter public discourse, with new allegations regarding the actress’s financial demands and work-life boundaries surfacing this week.
The Profit-Sharing Controversy
The controversy was reignited by Pranay Reddy, the director’s brother, who recently addressed the exit in an interview with NTV Telugu. According to Pranay, while remuneration and scheduling conflicts were primary factors, there were additional financial hurdles. He claimed that the production team struggled with an alleged demand from the actress for a 10% share in the film’s profits.
"She can ask for anything," Pranay stated. "If we are willing to give, we can give. But the economics should also work out for us… Once we started looking for other options, they started leaking everything."
Conflicting Narratives: The Meeting That Never Was
The nature of the professional relationship between the star and the filmmaker has also come under scrutiny. Contrary to the narrative that a partnership was well underway, reports indicate that Padukone and Vanga met only once. Sources claim the director arrived an hour late, and the conversation was limited to a one-liner pitch rather than a full script narration. It is widely reported that the actress maintains a strict policy of never committing to a project without a full narration, suggesting that Spirit was never a viable contender for her schedule.
Furthermore, critics close to the situation suggest that the ideological divide between the two—specifically regarding Vanga’s contentious cinematic style—made a collaboration unlikely from the start.
Work-Life Boundaries and Professionalism
Deepika’s exit, which occurred in April 2025, was originally linked to her request for an eight-hour workday as a new mother—a boundary that reportedly clashed with the production’s requirements. This triggered a larger industry-wide debate regarding the rigid working conditions often demanded on big-budget Indian film sets.
The situation turned acrimonious when Vanga took to social media to voice his frustrations. Addressing rumors that the actress left due to discomfort with intimate scenes, Vanga posted a scathing message on X (formerly Twitter): "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith… But by doing this, you’ve ‘DISCLOSED’ the person that you are… Is this what your feminism stands for?"
Deepika has remained largely silent, though she recently signaled her stance by liking an Instagram post that championed her right to demand professional standard terms—terms, the post noted, that are "routinely granted to male stars."
Future Prospects
While the dust settles, both parties have moved on. Triptii Dimri has been cast as the female lead alongside Prabhas in Spirit, with the film slated for release on March 5, 2027.
Deepika Padukone, meanwhile, continues to build a robust slate of projects. Fans are anticipating her upcoming release King, which reunites her with Shah Rukh Khan this December, as well as Atlee’s Raaka, co-starring Allu Arjun, scheduled for next year.
