Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Pluto’ Starring Neeraj Madhav and Althaf Salim Sets OTT Release Date
Malayalam cinema’s recent experiment with the science-fiction genre, Pluto, is officially heading to streaming platforms. Following a modest run in theaters, fans who missed the film on the big screen will soon have the chance to watch the unique interstellar tale from the comfort of their homes.
From Theaters to Digital Screens
Released in theaters on July 30, Pluto—which features a lead performance by Neeraj Madhav alongside Althaf Salim—aimed to carve out a niche by blending science fiction with comedy and emotional drama. While the film encountered mixed reviews and faced challenges in generating significant box-office momentum, it remains a notable attempt at genre-bending storytelling within the Malayalam film industry.
According to the latest announcements, the Pluto OTT release is scheduled for August 24, with the film becoming available exclusively on the Saina Play streaming service.
An Unusual Intergalactic Bond
The film centers on Vicky (played by Neeraj Madhav), a young man whose mundane life is upended when he discovers a stranded alien. Much like classic cinematic explorations of human-alien friendships—reminiscent of E.T. or the Bollywood hit Koi Mil Gaya—the narrative hinges on the evolving relationship between the two protagonists.
However, Pluto chooses to sidestep standard sci-fi tropes. Instead of presenting the extraterrestrial as an all-powerful, invincible entity, the film portrays Pluto as a vulnerable outsider navigating unfamiliar territory, mirroring the protagonist’s own personal struggles.
A Missed Opportunity?
Despite its innovative premise, the film received a mixed critical reception. ETimes awarded the film a 2-star rating, noting that while the ambition behind the project is commendable, the execution failed to fully maximize its potential.
The review highlighted that Malayalam cinema’s growing interest in sci-fi is a positive trend, but cautioned that limited budgets should not curb creative vision. Drawing comparisons to inventive successes like Everything Everywhere All at Once and PK, the critique suggested that Pluto had the components for a truly memorable, "wonderfully bizarre" experience but ultimately settled for being a standard, occasionally humorous entertainer.
Regardless of the critical consensus, Pluto stands as a testament to the industry’s ongoing efforts to diversify its storytelling landscape, and viewers can soon judge the film for themselves when it arrives on Saina Play this Saturday.
