Search and Rescue Operation Underway After Cargo Ship Sinks Off India’s Coast

A massive search and rescue operation is currently underway in the Bay of Bengal after a Panama-flagged cargo vessel sank off the eastern coast of India. The incident, involving the merchant ship Ocean Winner, has prompted a coordinated response from the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy to locate the 24 crew members who were on board at the time of the distress.

According to preliminary reports, at least two crew members have been rescued thus far. The vessel was carrying a multinational crew, which included 20 Chinese nationals, three seamen from Myanmar, and one from Bangladesh.

The cargo ship was approximately 240 nautical miles (444 kilometers) off the coast of Odisha when the disaster occurred. Ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic indicates that the Ocean Winner had recently departed from Paradip port, carrying a cargo of iron ore destined for Singapore.

At this stage, the cause of the sinking remains unknown. Authorities have not yet released details regarding potential mechanical failures or weather-related complications that may have led to the vessel taking on water.

Local officials in Paradip are working closely with national maritime authorities to coordinate the recovery efforts. Sanjay Negi, a local police official, indicated that specialized rescue teams are expected to reach the coordinates of the sinking by tomorrow morning. In the meantime, the Indian Coast Guard has issued urgent alerts to all other vessels in the vicinity, requesting them to divert course and assist in scanning the waters for further survivors.

As the situation develops, international maritime agencies and the embassies of the affected nations are expected to monitor the search operation closely. The Indian military continues to deploy assets to the area, despite the significant distance from the shoreline, as the race against time to find the remaining 22 crew members intensifies.
