Andrew Garfield Opens Up About Potential Exit from Hollywood: “I Could Go Whittle Wood in the Somerset Countryside”
For years, Andrew Garfield has captivated audiences with powerhouse performances in films ranging from the blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man to the critically acclaimed musical drama Tick, Tick… Boom! However, behind the glitz of the red carpet and the intensity of his craft, the actor admits that he has frequently contemplated a life far removed from the spotlight.
In a recent, candid interview with Variety, the Oscar-nominated actor revealed that the desire to step away from the industry has been a recurring theme in his thoughts over the last couple of years. Despite a grueling schedule that saw him working non-stop for 12 months straight, Garfield confessed that his ideal existence would involve a much quieter, more terrestrial pace.
“If I had my druthers, people would just see [my projects], and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing,” Garfield shared. While he acknowledges the necessity of promoting his films, he clearly yearns for a reality untethered from the demands of celebrity.
A Shift in Ambition
Garfield reflected on how his motivations have evolved since he first started his career. Having already achieved his major professional milestones—including the dream of portraying the iconic web-slinger, Spider-Man—the actor is now recalibrating his focus. He noted that he is moving away from a mindset driven by constant achievement and toward one centered on personal fulfillment.
“I still have dreams, but they’re slightly more earthbound than my previous ones,” Garfield explained. “They’re maybe a bit more philosophical and existential than achievement-based. Now I think it’s more that I want a certain quality of life. I want a certain quality of relationships with my family and friends. I want a certain quality of relationship with myself.”
Looking Ahead
This is not the first time the actor has signaled a need for a change of pace. Garfield famously took an extended hiatus from acting in 2022 to reset, eventually returning to the screen in 2024 for the romantic drama We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh.
Despite his musings on leaving Hollywood, the actor remains a prominent fixture in cinema. He recently starred in the fantasy-adventure The Magic Faraway Tree (released August 21, 2026) and is gearing up for his lead role in the upcoming film The Uprising, which is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
Whether these projects mark the final chapters of a storied career or simply another stepping stone, Garfield’s honesty highlights a growing trend among A-list stars who are increasingly prioritizing mental well-being and personal peace over the relentless pressures of fame.
