Cricket Legends Unite: 21 Former Captains Renew Appeal for Imran Khan’s Medical Care
In a poignant display of sporting solidarity, 21 former international cricket captains from nine nations have issued a formal appeal to Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, urging the government to ensure humane medical treatment and welfare for the country’s former leader and 1992 World Cup-winning skipper, Imran Khan.
The group, which includes legendary Indian icons such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Dilip Vengsarkar, penned the letter in response to recent developments that signatories argue have failed to uphold the directives of Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
A Bond Beyond Borders
This latest communication serves as a follow-up to a previous appeal sent in February, signed by 14 captains. Despite the gravity of that initial request, the group received no official response from the Pakistani government.
"We wrote then not as politicians, but as former colleagues and rivals who share a bond forged on the cricket field—one that transcends the borders and disputes that too often divide countries," the letter stated.
The signatories emphasized that they are not seeking to intervene in Pakistan’s domestic legal or political affairs. Instead, they are advocating for the basic humanitarian rights of a 73-year-old man who has spent more than three years in custody.
The Point of Contention
The appeal was triggered by the circumstances surrounding a recent Supreme Court order, which mandated that Khan be transferred to a hospital for a comprehensive medical examination by a board including his own personal physicians and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan. Additionally, the court reinstated weekly family visits.
However, the medical assessment was cut short. Khan, who is reported to be suffering from severe health issues—including concerns regarding vision loss in his right eye—was returned to Adiala Jail after only a few hours. According to the signatories, he was examined by a state-appointed team rather than the court-mandated board, and was prematurely declared "medically fit."
Specific Demands
Spearheaded by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, the group has issued three clear requests:
- Independent Assessment: That the medical board directed by the Supreme Court, featuring Khan’s own doctors, be permitted to complete a full and independent health evaluation.
- Uninterrupted Access: That the reinstated weekly family visits be honored without administrative delays or interference.
- Swift Action: That any treatment or care recommended by the independent medical board be provided immediately.
"We’re not asking Pakistan for anything unusual—just that a court order most countries would take for granted is actually carried out," Chappell noted.

The list of signatories reflects the universal esteem in which Khan is held by his peers across the cricketing world. In addition to the Indian legends, the letter is backed by a star-studded cohort including:
