Injury Scare Averted: Rishabh Pant Cleared to Resume Play After Collision in Colombo Test

COLOMBO: The Indian cricket camp breathed a collective sigh of relief on Sunday as batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is expected to return to the crease on Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Pant’s participation was thrown into doubt during the final session of the opening day after he was struck on the left arm by a fiery short-pitched delivery from Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara. The incident occurred in the 58th over when Pant attempted a pull shot behind square, only to mistime the connection, resulting in the ball thudding into his arm.

A Tense Departure

The impact was immediate and clearly painful. The Indian team’s medical staff rushed onto the field to administer an ice pack, attempting to stabilize the area with tape. However, the discomfort proved too much for the dynamic gloveman to continue. Despite having managed just three runs from 15 deliveries, Pant was forced to walk off the field, accompanied by the physiotherapist. His departure necessitated a change in the batting lineup, with Ravindra Jadeja stepping in to join the well-set Devdutt Padikkal.

Addressing the media following the day’s play, Kotak offered a reassuring update regarding the star player’s condition. "Rishabh Pant will be fine to bat tomorrow," Kotak confirmed, dismissing concerns of a long-term injury that might have sidelined him for the remainder of the match.

Padikkal’s Gritty Ton Anchors India

While the injury scare cast a shadow over the afternoon, the day was largely defined by the masterful performance of Devdutt Padikkal. The left-hander delivered a scintillating 117 off 168 balls, marking his second consecutive century of the series.

Coming off a brilliant 167-run knock in the series opener in Galle—which propelled India to a commanding 165-run victory—Padikkal proved once again that he is in the form of his life. His innings was not without its moments of fortune; he was dropped twice, once at 0 and again at 1. However, the Karnataka batter capitalized on those lapses, demonstrating immense patience and technical discipline on a testing Colombo track.

"Padikkal is making the most of the opportunities he has received," Kotak noted, lauding the youngster’s temperament as he anchored the innings during a period where India lost wickets at regular intervals.

As the match progresses, all eyes will be on Pant’s return to the crease. With India leading the two-match series 1-0, the team will be eager to see their explosive middle-order batter back in action to help build a formidable total and close in on a series sweep.
