Bali Tourism Officials Reassure Travelers Amid US Health Advisory on Zika Virus

JAKARTA – The Bali Tourism Office has issued a strong message of reassurance to international visitors, asserting that the island remains a secure and premier destination despite a recent health advisory from the United States regarding the Zika virus.

I Wayan Sumarajaya, head of the Bali Tourism Office, urged travelers to remain confident in their vacation plans. "I hope tourists are not afraid to come to Bali, because Bali is a safe and comfortable place to vacation," Sumarajaya stated on Sunday.

The reassurance follows a Level 2 Travel Health Notice issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on August 7, 2026. The advisory, which falls under the "Practice Enhanced Precautions" category, was prompted by reports of Zika cases detected in travelers returning home from the island.

No Local Cases Confirmed

Local health authorities have moved quickly to address concerns, definitively stating that there have been no confirmed cases of local Zika virus transmission within Bali to date.

I Gusti Ayu Raka Susanti, who leads the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division at the Bali Provincial Health Office, emphasized that the situation is currently well-managed. She noted that standard preventive measures—identical to those used to combat dengue fever (DHF)—are highly effective against Zika, as both viruses are transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.

"Taking such precautions is sufficient," said Susanti, echoing the tourism office’s call for continued vigilance.

Enhanced Precautions, Not a Travel Ban

The CDC’s Level 2 designation is a reminder for travelers to be mindful of their health, rather than a deterrent. Officials clarified that this notice does not constitute a travel ban or a recommendation to avoid the region. It serves as a directive to exercise heightened caution, particularly regarding mosquito bites and sexual transmission, which the CDC identifies as secondary routes of infection.

While the Zika virus is often asymptomatic or mild—causing symptoms such as rash, fever, headaches, joint pain, and red eyes—the CDC remains particularly cautious for pregnant women or those planning to conceive, citing the potential risk of birth defects.

A Call for Industry Vigilance

As Bali remains a global tourism hub, officials are calling on industry stakeholders to uphold rigorous health and sanitation standards. Sumarajaya stressed that maintaining high-quality services and prioritizing the health and comfort of guests is essential in the current climate.

"As a tropical country, preventive measures are important," Sumarajaya added. "Tourists should remain vigilant and avoid mosquito bites, just as they do to prevent dengue."

By maintaining these health protocols, Bali tourism authorities remain confident that the island’s reputation as a world-class, safe destination will persist as they continue to work in close coordination with the provincial health office to monitor the Bali tourism landscape.
