India Eyes Global Trade Dominance: New FTAs to Bring 75% of World Market Under its Umbrella

TOKYO – India is aggressively expanding its international economic footprint, with the government actively negotiating new trade pacts that are set to bring nearly three-quarters of global trade under the country’s preferential trade network.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who is currently leading a high-profile business delegation of over 200 representatives in Japan, announced on Monday that India is in advanced talks with 8 to 9 new groups of nations. Once finalized, these deals are expected to encompass an additional $15 trillion in combined GDP.

A Strategy for Global Integration

The government’s overarching objective is to cement India’s status as a “trusted partner” within the intricate web of global value chains. According to Minister Goyal, the country’s current Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have already positioned India as a pivotal player in the international market.

Over the past four years, India has successfully inked nine trade agreements covering 38 developed economies with a combined GDP of $60 trillion. When combined with established arrangements involving Japan, South Korea, and the ASEAN region—which represent another $10 trillion—India now provides preferential market access to a massive $70 trillion economy.

Strengthening Indo-Japanese Ties

During his visit to Japan, Minister Goyal emphasized the deepening synergy between the two nations. Addressing business leaders, he highlighted that India’s massive domestic market, paired with its commitment to global economic integration, makes it an ideal destination for foreign investment.

“India opens up the doors to preferential market access to a $70 trillion economy,” Goyal stated. “With the ongoing negotiations, we are moving toward a point where 75 percent of global trade will be covered through our free trade agreements.”

The Minister specifically invited Japanese investors to explore high-growth sectors in India, noting that the country offers substantial opportunities in:

  • Manufacturing: Leveraging the “Make in India” initiative to scale production.
  • Data Centers: Expanding digital infrastructure to support the growing tech economy.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Capitalizing on India’s burgeoning talent pool and research ecosystem.

Toward Balanced Trade

A key focus of the ongoing talks with Japan is addressing the trade deficit. Goyal expressed optimism that as economic ties strengthen and bilateral cooperation in emerging technologies increases, the trade balance between New Delhi and Tokyo will reach a more equitable equilibrium.

As India continues its aggressive push toward liberalizing trade, the government’s message remains clear: the nation is no longer just a consumer market but a manufacturing and innovation hub ready to anchor the next generation of global commerce.
