The Witcher 4 Release Date Confirmed, Gamescom Songs of the Past Showcase Announced

CD Projekt Red Confirms 2028 Release Window for The Witcher 4; Major ‘Songs of the Past’ Expansion Details Incoming

Four years after the initial announcement of the next major entry in the franchise, CD Projekt Red has finally provided a definitive timeline for the future of the series. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed that The Witcher 4 is currently slated for a 2028 release.

The update arrived via a two-minute video address posted to the official Witcher social media channels, alongside an invitation to a highly anticipated showcase at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

A Dual Focus at Gamescom

While the 2028 window for the Ciri-led sequel will certainly dominate the headlines, CD Projekt Red’s presence at this year’s Gamescom is primarily focused on the immediate future of the franchise: The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past.

Nowakowski confirmed that the studio will have a significant presence in Hall 8 of the trade show, where they will provide a deep dive into the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion. Previously announced for a 2027 release, this expansion promises to continue Geralt’s story more than a decade after the original game’s conclusion. Fans can expect a full reveal of the expansion’s narrative elements and new gameplay content during the Opening Night Live event tomorrow.

The Witcher 4: A Massive Undertaking

Regarding the fourth installment, which is centered on the fan-favorite character Ciri, the update provides a glimpse into the scale of the project. Nowakowski revealed that development is currently in full swing with a team of over 500 developers dedicated to the title.

He described the upcoming project as featuring a “huge and immersive open world,” “intense and action-packed gameplay,” and the “deep, impactful storytelling” that has become the hallmark of the studio. While no further gameplay footage or details were provided for The Witcher 4 ahead of the show, the scale of the development team suggests that CD Projekt Red is aiming to set a new benchmark for the genre.

What Comes Next?

The Gamescom showcase will be the first opportunity for the public to get a clearer picture of the studio’s roadmap leading into 2028. With Songs of the Past bridging the gap and a new saga beginning with the next entry, the coming years promise to be a pivotal time for Witcher fans worldwide.

The trade show opens for industry professionals and journalists this Wednesday, with doors opening to the public starting Thursday. Stay tuned for further coverage as we learn more from the show floor in Cologne.
