Imran Khan Reflects on His “Most Miserable” Film and the Price of Peace of Mind
After a decade-long hiatus from the silver screen, actor Imran Khan is offering a candid glimpse into the personal transformation that defined his time away from Bollywood. In a recent interview, the Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na star opened up about the professional boundaries he has established, revealing that a lucrative paycheck is no longer enough to compromise his well-being.
The True Cost of a Paycheck
In a frank conversation with Brut, Imran Khan reflected on a specific project from his past—one that remains unnamed but left a lasting, negative impact. Despite it being the highest-paid film of his career, the actor described the experience as his most miserable.
“The film I made that specifically gave me my highest pay cheque in my life, was also the most miserable film I made… the process of making it,” Khan admitted. “That taught me the lesson of how much is that money worth and how much is your time and peace of mind worth. What’s your trade-off point? What’s the point where you say, ‘Keep the money?'”
This grueling experience served as a catalyst for his current philosophy regarding work. The actor emphasized that he has since established a firm threshold; if a project compromises his values or mental health, he is prepared to walk away, regardless of how high the financial incentive might be. “Even if the price is double, or three times the money, I still won’t do that,” he noted.
A Gradual Drift, Not a Dramatic Exit
The actor’s departure from the limelight, which began after his final lead role in 2015’s Katti Batti, was often perceived by the public as an abrupt resignation. However, Khan clarifies that his hiatus was a “slow unraveling.”
Speaking previously to Film Companion, he explained that his absence was not a pre-planned retirement but a gradual drift. “It was kind of a process of a week becoming a month, a month becoming three and becoming a year, and a year becoming two,” Khan shared. “I said, ‘Okay, I won’t do this because my heart’s not in it.'”
For Khan, the last ten years have been a period of deep introspection. After spending his 20s intensely focused on his career, he found that his 30s required a different path. “These past 10 years I have spent kind of grappling with the larger questions of who am I, what do I want to do, what do I want to be,” he explained, noting that the industry had ceased to provide him with personal fulfillment.

Imran Khan’s return to the industry is now imminent, marking the end of a decade-long absence that saw his transition from a fan-favorite romantic lead in hits like I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly to a more reclusive, reflective phase of his life.
The actor is currently gearing up for his highly anticipated return in the Netflix film Adhure Hum Adhure Tum. Directed by Danish Aslam—with whom he previously collaborated on Break Ke Baad—the project also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada.
