Resilient Sri Lanka Fights Back Against India as Rain Halts Second Test
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s resistance against a dominant India continued on Tuesday as persistent rain cut short the third day of the second Test, leaving the hosts fighting to avoid the follow-on.
At the close of play, Sri Lanka stood at 265-8, trailing India’s imposing first-innings total of 503-9 declared by 238 runs. The hosts require a further 39 runs to avert the follow-on and force India to bat again. Weather interruptions were the theme of the day, with only 80.4 of the scheduled 98 overs possible due to recurring showers that forced the ground staff to scramble with the covers.
India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, confirmed that the tourists are eager to clean up the tail early on day four. “With the amount of rain that is around, it takes a lot of time to put the covers on and take covers off,” Morkel told reporters. “So given the lead we have, we want to ask them to follow on and put them under pressure.”
A Day of Grit and Grind
The morning session saw Sri Lanka resume from a precarious overnight position of 8-2. Despite losing two early wickets, the hosts found stability through Pasindu Sooriyabandara. Making his first start in the XI, Sooriyabandara played a defiant knock of 80, though he expressed disappointment at not converting his start into a century.
India’s pacers, led by a clinical Prasidh Krishna, proved difficult to manage throughout the day. Krishna was the standout performer, claiming three wickets while extracting awkward bounce from the surface that consistently troubled the Sri Lankan top and middle order.
The match reached a critical juncture after lunch when wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella departed for a three-ball duck, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 173-7.
The Dinusha Factor
If there is a glimmer of hope for the home side, it remains the form of Sonal Dinusha. Following his stellar showing in the opening Test—where he struck 100 and 84 in Galle—the all-rounder continued his excellent run, finishing the day unbeaten on 85.
Dinusha anchored the lower order, first putting together a 57-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha (18) and later frustrating the Indian attack with fast bowler Lahiru Kumara. The pair added 35 runs for the ninth wicket, with Kumara displaying surprising patience at the crease for over an hour.
Series Context
India currently leads the two-match series 1-0, having dominated the first Test in Galle with a 165-run victory. As the second Test moves into day four, the primary objective for the hosts remains survival, while the visitors look to capitalize on the follow-on to secure a series sweep.
With more weather interruptions possible, the pressure will be on India to claim the remaining two wickets quickly, while Sri Lanka will be looking to Dinusha to nudge them closer to respectability.
