Nitin Gadkari Clarifies Remarks on Stepping Back, Dismisses Speculation of Political Exit

NEW DELHI: The office of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, issued a firm clarification on Tuesday, putting to rest rumors that the senior BJP leader was planning to retire from active politics.

The speculation originated from a speech delivered by the minister on Sunday at an event in his home constituency of Nagpur. During the address, Gadkari reflected on his three-decade-long career in public service, noting that he had navigated numerous professional highs and lows while fulfilling various roles. In a portion of the speech, he suggested that the “younger generation” should be empowered to take on greater responsibilities, adding that he “could no longer take on as much work as before.”

Following widespread media coverage that interpreted these comments as an intention to step away from his national political responsibilities, the minister’s office stepped in to correct the narrative.

Context vs. Misinterpretation

In an official statement, Gadkari’s office emphasized that the remarks were being taken entirely out of context. The clarification specified that the Minister’s comments were directed exclusively toward the internal operations of the Laxmanrao Mankar Trust—a non-profit organization founded by the Minister that oversees the operation of Ekal Vidyalayas (one-teacher schools) in tribal regions across India.

“In that context, Gadkari said that he could no longer take on as much work as before and that the younger generation should be given an opportunity to take greater responsibility,” the statement read. “His remarks were clearly related to the functioning and future leadership of the Trust. However, some television channels are presenting the statement as a political remark, taking it out of its actual context.”

A Long-Standing Career

Nitin Gadkari remains one of the most prominent faces of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been a central figure in the Modi government’s infrastructure push. Known for his rapid development of India’s highway network, his tenure as Minister for Road Transport and Highways has been marked by a focus on high-speed execution and modernization.

By clarifying that the comments were intended for an organizational reshuffle within his charitable trust rather than a pivot in his public political career, his office has effectively neutralized the rumors of an imminent departure from government service.
