Bollywood Mourns the Loss of ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ Director Kuku Kohli

The Indian film fraternity is in mourning following the passing of veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, best known for directing the iconic 1991 blockbuster Phool Aur Kaante. Kohli passed away on August 25 in Mumbai following a sudden and tragic medical emergency.

The news of his demise was confirmed by a spokesperson for his wife, the celebrated veteran actor Aruna Irani. The couple had been married since 1990.

A Sudden Turn of Events

According to details provided by the family spokesperson, the filmmaker’s health took a rapid downturn earlier this week. Kohli reportedly felt restless on Monday night and suffered a mild heart attack. He was immediately rushed to Kokilaben Hospital, where medical professionals successfully performed an angioplasty. Initially, the procedure appeared to be a success, and his condition was reported as stable.

However, the situation took a devastating turn on Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 5:15 pm, Kohli suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Reports indicate that Aruna Irani was by his side at the hospital, sharing light-hearted moments and exchanging messages with her husband just before his condition suddenly deteriorated. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he ceased responding shortly thereafter.

A Final Farewell

The film industry gathered at a crematorium in Andheri on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the late director. A visibly devastated Aruna Irani was supported by family members as she arrived to bid farewell to her husband.

Prominent figures from the industry were present to offer their condolences, including directors Rohit Shetty and Sham Kaushal, alongside actors Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif. Notable industry veterans, including Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Raza Murad, and Deepak Parashar, were also spotted at the funeral to honor the filmmaker’s legacy.

A Legacy of Commercial Cinema

Kuku Kohli’s contribution to Bollywood left a lasting impact on 90s cinema. Beyond his massive success with Phool Aur Kaante—the film that famously launched Ajay Devgn—Kohli directed several other notable projects that defined the era. His filmography includes the action-drama Haqeeqat starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Amrish Puri, the ensemble drama Suhaag featuring Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Karisma Kapoor, and the multi-starrer Kohraam.

Before his marriage to Aruna Irani, Kohli was previously married to Rita Kohli, with whom he had two daughters. He leaves behind a significant body of work that remains a staple of Indian commercial cinema.
