Yash’s ‘Toxic’ Storms the Box Office: Day 1 Collections Cross Rs 50 Crore, Outpacing ‘Dhurandhar’

Yash has once again proven his dominance as a pan-India superstar. His latest cinematic outing, Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, has taken the Indian box office by storm, recording a thunderous opening day. Despite a polarized reception from critics and online debates regarding its intense themes, the Geetu Mohandas directorial has seen massive footfalls, comfortably outpacing the opening-day performance of Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar.

A Record-Breaking Start

According to data provided by industry tracker Sacnilk, the momentum behind Toxic was palpable from the very first show. By 3 PM on its opening day, the film had already raked in a staggering Rs 54.85 crore net in India across 13,556 shows. At that point, the film’s India gross had surged to Rs 64.72 crore.

This performance signifies a dominant lead over the opening-day figures of Dhurandhar (Part 1), which managed Rs 28.60 crore net. Toxic managed to surpass that total before the sun had even set, setting the stage for what trade analysts believe could be a historic box office run. While the franchise successor, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, previously set a high bar with an opening day of Rs 102.55 crore, industry experts are closely watching to see if Toxic can close the gap as evening and night show figures continue to pour in.

Pan-India Appeal and Massive Scale

The film’s success is a testament to Yash’s massive fan base, which remains unbothered by mixed early reviews. The project, which marks Yash’s much-anticipated return to the screen following the global phenomenon KGF: Chapter 2, enjoyed an aggressive pre-release strategy. With over one million tickets sold in advance, the film secured a wider release footprint than almost any other Indian production, hitting over 12,000 screens worldwide.

The demand was consistent across all regions. While the Kannada version led the charge, significant contributions came from the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam markets, confirming the film’s status as a true pan-India event.

Critical Reception vs. Audience Curiosity

The film’s path has not been without controversy. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the movie—which features a star-studded ensemble cast including Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth, and Tara Sutaria—has been the subject of intense online discourse. While viewers have largely lauded the film’s high-octane visual scale and Yash’s commanding screen presence, others have expressed reservations regarding the narrative’s complexity and the inclusion of explicit violence and intimate content.

The CBFC’s decision to grant the film an ‘A’ certificate for adult audiences only added to the pre-release buzz, fueling audience curiosity rather than dampening it.

The Road to a Rs 100 Crore Opening

As the industry awaits the final tally, all eyes are on whether Toxic can cement its status as the year’s biggest opener. With strong evening occupancy and a growing word-of-mouth narrative, the film is firmly in the conversation for an Rs 80 crore-plus domestic net opening and a potential Rs 100 crore-plus worldwide haul on Day 1.

For fans and analysts alike, the Toxic performance serves as a powerful reminder of the “Yash factor” in Indian cinema. Whether the film maintains this velocity through the weekend remains to be seen, but for now, it has undoubtedly delivered a massive commercial statement.
