Jordan, China Sign MoU on Environment and Climate Cooperation

Jordan and China Forge Strategic Partnership to Tackle Climate Change and Environmental Challenges

AMMAN — In a significant move to bolster international climate action, Jordan and China have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation on environmental protection and the global transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

The agreement, finalized on the sidelines of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s high-level visit to China—during which he held extensive talks with President Xi Jinping—marks a pivotal chapter in the diplomatic and environmental relations between the two nations. This partnership serves as a comprehensive framework designed to integrate socioeconomic goals with robust environmental safeguards.

A Multidimensional Partnership

The newly inked memorandum of understanding outlines a wide range of collaborative efforts. Key areas of focus include:

  • Environmental Governance: Coordination on management, planning policies, and rigorous environmental impact assessments.
  • Resource Management: Advancements in solid waste management—with a specific focus on plastic reduction—and marine environmental protection.
  • Biodiversity and Pollution: Joint initiatives to protect natural ecosystems and implement effective pollution prevention strategies.
  • Knowledge Exchange: A commitment to sharing research, expertise, and best practices through academic visits, training programs, and joint workshops.

Strengthening Jordan’s Economic Modernisation Vision

Jordan’s Minister of Environment, Ayman Suleiman, lauded the agreement as a vital step in enhancing the Kingdom’s international partnerships. According to Suleiman, the MoU is perfectly aligned with Jordan’s national Economic Modernisation Vision, specifically the pillar dedicated to creating a sustainable environment.

“Jordan is eager to leverage international expertise and modern technologies to meet our national objectives,” said Suleiman. “This partnership will be instrumental as we work to improve resource efficiency, support our circular economy, and build national resilience against the existential threats posed by climate change.”

Implementation and Future Outlook

To ensure the agreement evolves from policy into tangible results, the Jordanian Ministry of Environment and China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment have been designated as the lead agencies. Each nation will appoint a dedicated coordinator tasked with overseeing joint activities and facilitating the rapid development of practical, long-term programs.

By aligning their environmental strategies, both Jordan and China are signaling a shared commitment to sustainable development. For Jordan, this cooperation is expected to be a cornerstone in meeting its international climate commitments, ensuring that the country remains on track to thrive in a greener, more sustainable future.
