Jersey Activates Desalination Plant as Drought Concerns Mount Following Extreme Weather

JERSEY – Amidst a year defined by unprecedented meteorological extremes, Jersey Water has officially activated its desalination plant in a move to bolster the island’s dwindling reservoir supplies. The decision comes as the island grapples with the lingering effects of a summer that saw record-breaking temperatures and a subsequent, sharp decline in water stocks.

A Year of Climate Extremes

The island’s water infrastructure has been under immense pressure following a volatile year of weather. After enduring its wettest February on record, the climate shifted abruptly, leading to the hottest June since observations began in 1894. During that period, temperatures soared to a staggering 39.3°C (102.7°F), placing a significant strain on the island’s natural resources.

The cumulative impact of these conditions has left reservoir levels at approximately 64%—a figure described by utility officials as “considerably low for this time of year.” While current demand is being met, Jersey Water warned that the island is highly dependent on significant rainfall throughout the upcoming autumn and winter months to replenish its reserves.

Boosting Supply

To mitigate the risk of further shortages, the desalination plant has begun contributing treated water into the Val de la Mare reservoir. The facility is expected to provide an output equivalent to roughly one-quarter of the island’s average daily consumption.

According to Jersey Water, the plant will operate at half capacity for the time being. However, they maintain the flexibility to scale up production should future weather conditions necessitate a more aggressive response.

A Narrow Escape

The activation of the plant comes on the heels of a precarious situation earlier this week. On Monday, a large fire broke out in close proximity to the facility. Jersey Water officials have described the incident as a “close call,” noting that had the blaze damaged the infrastructure, the island would have been stripped of a critical tool in its drought response strategy.

As the island looks ahead, the intersection of record-breaking heatwaves and the reliance on technological solutions like desalination highlights the growing challenges Jersey faces in maintaining water security in an increasingly unpredictable climate.
